Speaking of flywheels

Yesterday morning as I was browsing here, I happened to remember that I had not instructed my indie who is converting my 300cd from automatic to stick to check the fw for balance.

DOH!

So fortunately it is not completely buttoned up yet and he is checking. The 240 fw I have for the job is neutral....with any luck my crank will be neutral also!

How the heck does an independant mechanic, or even the Mercedes dealer check the flywheel to see if it is balanced? I would think that the crank, flywheel and front pulley are all dynamically balanced as a set when they are assembling the engine at the factory.

What is neutral when it comes to balancing a flywheel? How can the mechanic tell if it is neutral? I would think that it is luck of the draw and that unless the rotating parts are dynamically balanced, it could never be perfect.

Let us know how smooth it is once you get it back.

Maybe used a tire balancer?

I am sure there are other ways, but in my case, my favorite machinist will put the fw on his crank balancer and give it a spin. He will be able to tell in a matter of seconds if it is neutral.

If it is not, then I will have to find someone with the equipment to do a match balance.

I don't think he can do that.

This brings up a question for me. When I got my 617 it came to me with no flywheel or flex plate on it. I also know it had been a transplant in it's former use before mine. So, is there any way to tell short of disassembling the engine what my crank is? I just took my old 616 flex plate and used it right now, and maybe it is or is not related to my loping feeling idle, but now that I am preparing to stuff this engine into my 82 with a manual behind it, I'd sure like to try and do it right this time now that I know they arent just bolt on and go. (I knew little if nothing about MB's back then).

Could you give a little more info on your setup?

The five cylinders are lopey at best and hop up and down at idle.

The heavy three hundred d euro flywheel dampens the hopping a lot though. My euro with the factory flywheel was so smooth at idle you would have sworn it was a six, but with an automatic the three hundreds hop up and down at idle.

Hmmmm. I just realized this situation might give me some issues.
I'm removing the seized engine in China, and installing the engine from Scar. So, there will be a different engine/crank/flywheel relationship here. I'm pretty much committed as I don't really have much of a choice other than installing the engine and seeing what happens.
Hmmm, I wonder where that flywheel from Scar went.......

Tom, did the 4 speed go into it or were you by chance able to track down a 5speed?

Lucky you with the balancing

It is just a four speed.

You many know that I do have a five speed tranny but it is in my ex ralley dedicated autocrosser 280e euro. Since that car has an interesting history I am planning to keep it all together as one car. ONe of these days I may actually put a roll bar and a fuel cell in it and actually venture onto the race tracks and race it in Vintage racing....

But after going up to Elkhart lake a few years back and witnessing first hand how hard some of them race I am not sure the old cojones are brassy enough to actually do it.

And I am too cheap to pay the price for a five speed for the cd.....even if I COULD actually find one.

But, yes, the ultimate set up would be a fiver with the 300d euro rear end, a 346. There you would get the good takeoff ratio and still be able to get 30 mpg on the highway.

I am leaving the 307 in the rear and crossing the fingers. The lovely daughter #4 is perhaps my best offspring driver (at this age) so perhaps it will work out ok.

Thanks for asking.

So today my indie's lead mechanic calls and says..."The engine is locked up. We cannot get it to turn even with a pipe wrench (I don't even wanna think what they were grabbing with that!)...any idea what it might be hitting?" he thought it might be hitting the bell housing. I said that the fw should work, at least five or six folks here had done the 240 fw and were fine. So I said I would call the parts guy and ask if there was a spacer used. I did that and also asked about the fw bolts which I had originally bought when I was going to put a stick in the 280e.

I found that the fw bolts were different on an auto and stick, so called him back and said so.

So about 430 he called and said it was up and running and I could pick it up. He had reused the automatic bolts instead of the new stick bolts I had supplied him to use.

So I think I will go out and get it.
