126 resonators

I understand some folks have replaced with straight a pipe to muffler, install hangers etc. Benefits? Why did you do this in the first place?

Replacing the resonator is pointless. Straight pipe for muffler on the other hand is a good deal. I just put my muffler back on after driving around for months without it. Certainly doesn't breathe as well.

I tossed the resonators on the SD. They rust at the inlets and would required replacements. A straight pipe, welded in place, fills the gap.

Only problem is that there is no easy way to support the pipe between the top of the downpipe and the muffler. The shop made two attempts but the result was a horrible resonating sound inside the cabin. Anything that secures the exhaust to the body won't work. I never did convince them to try a proper "hangar" for the exhaust.

With the current setup, there is a very slight drone at exactly 2000 rpm.......but, it's not objectionable.

Thanks for the replies, B.C., would a similar "hook" affair welded strategically to undercarriage with rubber dougnuts attached to hooks welded onto new pipe work? The problem I'm trying to correct is the terrible shake I get at idle. Yesterday, I started the car after a couple of days of sitting. Started fine, smooth idle, got to a stop light, still smooth, then sitting there, the shakes, lopping what have you started. It seems to me to be a pressure build up somewhere. Just now reamed out fuel vent, did not seem to be enough resistance, and dirt fall out to be a clog of this magnitude. Only other thing I can think of, is exhaust back pressure. Seems okay with higher rpm. If I don't need to spend the $ on a custom exhaust, well, I'm money ahead. Can't come up with anything else.

Yes, I believe that it would work. I attempted to the the exhaust shop to move in that direction, but, the mindset was fixed.

You'll need to weld to the driveshaft cover in some fashion because the exhaust pipe is directly beneath it.

The exposed drive shaft short comings would be around the flex disc? Would they be able to route around any problem areas? Not wanting to interfere with suspension travel, or any future maintenance issues. This is a custom exhaust shop that I'm going to Monday. Thanks.

There's no good place for a hanger other than the driveshaft cover. You'll see when you get under there. Whatever you do, don't let them use a rigid hanger. If they can't truly hang it from rubber donuts, just let them weld the entire assembly and suspend it from the muffler in the back. It'll be acceptable.

Yeah, have been under recently replacing all "doughnuts", welding anywhere else would cause problems I don't want to deal with?

I have replaced the rear muffler on several benzes with straight pipe. The result is a little growl and perhaps a little more mileage and power. No ill effects were noted except the mrs. thought it was kiindof juvenile.

I don't think you'll cause any problems if you simply suspend the exhaust from rubber hangars. The location of the drive shaft cover will probably dictate the position for the hangars. I don't see any other preferable location.

If you do manage to get the shop to use a proper center hangar, see if you can take a photo of it.

I'd still prefer to eventually get the SD to that condition.

Will try. Probably won't be able to when car is on lift, and my camera does not have a macro lens, so may be "fuzzy". Doing this only to stop shake, thinking back pressure is causing my problem. Pipes don't seem to have rust, maybe interior of resonators clogged up.

I'm betting against clogged resonators as your problem here. The resonators do offer some small increase in backpressure, but, it's not going to cause the vehicle to shake.
