80 Manual Trans+ Any 616 engine =Compatible?

Hi, I have a project 82 240d that I'm in the process of changing to manual. I've changed the pedals and shifter, the next step is to put in the engine and transmission. I have a 4 speed manual transmission from a buid dated July '80 240d, but I have to source an engine. My question is: does it matter what year engine I find as long as it's from a w123 240d? Also, does it matter if it's from a manual or auto car?

Thanks,
Mike

No problem bolting everything up. There was a few differences in the throttle linkage, and glow plug sys between Early (pre 80) and later W123s. So your best bet would be a "later" engine since your putting it in an 82 body. If its an automatic you will of course need to install a pilot bearing and get all the clutch stuff. Then theres the issue of balancing the flywheel. All very doable.

Thanks, I'll look for an '82 motor. Er, what's a pilot bearing? And by clutch stuff I assume you mean the clutch pedal, brake fluid line, and slave cylinders that attatch to the transmission?

Why not put a 617 in there instead of a 616 since you're having to get an engine anyway?

617 is a bit more of a ride. you have to shorten the driveshaft change out the rear end and balance the flywheels. anything from two 240d's will work. except for minor parts changed in 1981 (camshafts,rockers)

You don't have to change it out to do a 617 swap. It's more of an "If you want to" step.

People flipping me off in traffic doesn't bother me that much . I hadn't really thought about using a 617. I couldn't shorten the driveshaft, if it were just a direct swap I'd consider it because I have a donor car with a complete drivetrain though the engine is shot. Fuel efficiency is probably just a little less with the 617.

Faster and better fuel efficiency!? I think I could find a shop to shorten the linkage and driveshaft 4". I'll have to research how to balance the flywheel to the flexplate. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, thanks for advice, I think I might just try this. Any more maintanence/reliability issues?

Here's a thread on 240D->617
240D 4 speed with a 5 cylinder??

A pilot bearing fits in the end of the crank shaft and carries the end of the input shaft of the manual tranny. An auto tranny car will have the hole in the crank for the bearing but its not needed, gota stick one in when you switch to a manual tranny. The turboed 5 cyl engines are great but you'd be getting into quite a bit more of a project, which is fine if your up for it. I prefer the simplicity of the 616 myself.
