Fastest 240d around!

Ok i am looking to beef up my 240d i have a 1981 4speed 240d. it shifts great. and i have a 616 in there now. and i have to tell you i am not happy with it at all. getting the finger from people when pulling into traffic is not fun. so i decided to get a turbo 5cylinder from the junkyard (or a 6cyilnder if i can find it.) but mainly a 5cylinder. and i am going to try and make it reliable but yet get under the 14 second mark. i am going to be ripping this engine apart and hot tubbing the block. what would you guys suggest? i would like to keep it daily driver if possible. gas mileage if it doesnt go under 20 i dont care.

I've currently got the fastest "240D" around. :D 0-60 in 13.5 seconds.

Cervan 06-28-2007 11:51 PM

lol whats really funny is that my fathers 1.4 liter toyota truck. does 0-60 in like.. 14 seconds o.o gota love 32+ with the ac on.

BioPOWER 06-29-2007 12:05 AM

13.5 sec.... that's what, half the stock time?? :D
Not bad!

I remember reading that the starter on the 60x engines is on the opposite side of that on the 616 and 617, thus requiring a different transmission. Can anyone verify this?

While we're talking 0-60, the E300 Turbo is listed at 8.5 sec......fastest stock IDI Benz diesel! :pleased:

If you get the power up you might want to consider a better rear end ratio as well. In fact a total donar car just might be more cost effective rather than a yard engine.

Our 300D we bought does 0-60 in about 12.3 seconds...and its stock...with an auto...its freakishly fast. Our SD's are boats...and they do it in about 13ish....the '83 is slightly faster than mine. How come yours isn't faster than 13.5 with all those mods and changes??? :dizzy2: Especially with that 3.69 diff ratio...you'd think it'd accelerate way faster....as all ours have the 3.07....

auto is actually faster with a turbo engine. you dont loose the spool with it. but any suggestions for the engine? its going to be totally gutted and rebuilt. i dont need a donor car. i dont have the space for it and really i dont need it. i have a huge selection of parts to go through all i need is the rear end and the driveshaft. i will have two 616 engines by time i put this one in.

Thats funny, I know how you feel. I Have a Garret T-3 turbo I am going to be installing in the next couple of months on my 240. I am going to dyno it before and after at my friends shop to see the horse power difference. I know, I have way to much time on my hands.

you put a turbo on your 240d? thats 616 4cylinder engine right? i would not recomend that.. it doesnt have piston coolers... and a number of things arent correct.

I have a manual transmission. It adds at least 1/4-1/2 second every time I have to shift gears. Even with a VNT turbo, there is still the shifting downtime where power is not going to the wheels.

If I had an automatic, I'm sure I could get into the sub-13 time.

Are speed clutching it?

No. The MB tranny is made for luxury, not performance. Shifting very fast will cause grinding.

Sometimes I'll get a bit rough with the clutch on take-off. I can do an unaided burnout on dry asphalt without much effort if I let it get full boost before releasing the clutch (Gotta love the VNT! :D).

Cervan 06-29-2007 03:28 AM

many times have i tried to speed shift. it has ended in "oh my god double clutch"

I've done that plenty of times before, especially going into third. I usually pressed the clutch just long enough to get the lever past the synchro but not long enough for the gears to connect.

It's also the worst tranny I've ever tried to shift without using the clutch.

Cervan 06-29-2007 04:41 PM

well i am going to go searching tommarow for a good used 617 engine. hopefully i find one thats not too thrashed.
