1988 300d?

I found a good deal on a 1988 300D, but haven't looked at it yet. I was wondering if there is anything I should look for when I do go to check it out? Does this car have a 5 or 6 cyl engine? If it's a 5, does it have an aluminum head? And if it does have an aluminum head, is it as problematic as the 6 cyl heads? Thanks for any info!

85 was the last year for the 617 5cyl motor. 88 should be a 603 6cyl with the #14 aluminum head. look for signs of leakage.

I'm really confused. I have been looking all over the web for info on this car, but from what I've come up with Mercedes didn't make a 300D in 1988?? It looks as if the only year for the 6 cylinder was the 87, then they stopped making them till 90 when the put a 5 cylinder in?

oh they made them alright, they are 250d not 300d. MB imported 300D to US in 87 and 89 that much I am certain of. 89 was last year for 124/201 afaik. Why dont you give us a linkey.

I myself have never heard of the existence of a 1988 300D, OR a 1989 for that matter. Unless, of course, you count the European market.

'89 was last year for 124/201 afaik.'

No, I'm pretty sure there were '90, '91, and '92 300Ds with the 2.5 Turbo. Maybe even '93, but no '94s. Now that I think of it, there were no '89 300Ds in the US. There were no '88 300Ds in the US.

'85 was the last year till '87, then none till 1990, then none after 1993 until '95. 1995 was the last year for w124 diesels. Then came the w210 non-turbos till '98 when they were turbocharged until 1999. After MY 2000 no diesels period until 2003 CDIs.

I thought the 90s were another body style. I do know for a fact that 190d was avail in 89 state side.

Well, I solved the mystery. The idiot that put it up for sale listed it as a 300D, but it was a 300E. I wasted several hours driving there only to find out it wasn't a diesel.
