Brilliant. If you ARE going to drive through high water, don't do it at top speed. Don't they train these guys how to drive?

I'd wager that it was not a diesel. The excess water probably would not have stopped it.

But, a gasser ingesting all that water might have shorted the ignition system.

Water can block the exhaust once the pipe is down more than a few inches.

The engine would overcome the resistance of the water. Quite a few boat exhausts are discharged underwater without issues.

yeah, more than likely in this case, the water in front of the car was what killed the motor. hard to compress even 8:1 with water... if it was a diesel, forget it. clunk bend crunch... gone.

i drove my SD on a road with the same result as those cops. i was going slower, and then the engine just stopped. i tried to start it and no luck. i opened the door, and the water was 1/4th inch from coming into the car. i got out and pushed the car (by myself) the 200 yards to dry land on the other side. then hopped into the car. she fired up, and i drove off. no problems! I'm sure the car didn't drink any water... and the exhaust was underwater. so I'm guessing that that is what stopped my engine.

The engine has enough pressure when running to probably blow a hole in the exhaust piping, so a little water covering the exhaust pipe isn't going to do anything. I've gone 20mph through water about 2 feet deep, and had 0 problems.

So why do adventure off-road vehicles have exhaust snorkles to keep the exhaust out of the water? Maybe the water cools the exhaust pipes so theres not enough heat to draw the gasses through the system? Just a guess.

"The engine has enough pressure when running to probably blow a hole in the exhaust piping, so a little water covering the exhaust pipe isn't going to do anything."

I'm pretty sure that’s not true... but if you'd like before I change my exhaust I’ll weld up the tips and see if it starts.... pretty damn sure it won't

if you think about it, a lot of the energy that pushed the exhaust out of the pipe is used up by the turbo, and if your at idle speeds going through water, there isn't that much force on the exhaust... and as soon and the pressure of the exhaust is out weighed by the weight of the water, the exhaust is going to stop flowing, and once that happens the engine is going to stop. I think the OM617 is bad a$$ but I doubt it breaks the laws of physics.

I bet if you talked to those cops, their van ran just fine after it was out of the water.

The minor pressure of being underwater won't stop the exhaust, many engines exhaust underwater on boats, many of those also have water-cooled exhaust manifolds and water pumped into the exhaust stream to cool it further.

The main reason for snorkels on deep-water vehicles is the intake (ex: unimog), and exhaust is only needed overhead if it is going to go through water deep enough to back up into the cylinders if the engine dies.
