78 240D automatic shift problem
I had a problem with the engine shutting off and after much research (with help from this forum) fixed the vacuum so it turns off promptly.
It appears I have created another problem with the kick-down on the automatic. It wants to slip if I force a kick-down. If I simply manually down shift, no slippage. Further research pointed to a common vacuum modulator problem with leaks or adjustments needed... One problem; I can not find a vacuum modulator on this transmission. I also can not find the location of any other components controlling this problem. Any suggestions on resources? Thanks |
The '78 doesn't have a vacuum modulator. Look at the back of the engine and see a rod that goes back to the trans that is hooked to the throttle linkage. I lengthened the rod and my trans shifted better...no slip. There is an 8mm head bolt that clamps a slider on the rod. ALSO I put a quart of TransX in my trans and all is well. Try it.

Thank you -- At least I know I was not overlooking something -- I will try that and post the results.

It Worked !
The advice on the linkage adjustment and the Transx made a major improvement in the shift quality and also fixed the kick-down slip problem.
