German engineering my ass

Replacing a completely rusted out trailing arm on an 83 240D
Been wrestling with rusted on seized bolts for a few days and finally have all the bolts loose, thank god.

But NOW, the last bolt cannot be removed because the driveshaft is in the way!!

If the fscking "German engineers" had just inserted the bolt on the other side this problem wouldn't exist!! But nooo, the nutted side had to be in the completely clear area and the bolt head side had to be obstructed by the ****ing driveshaft.

So what do I do now? Drop the whole driveshaft?? I don't even know if that would help because it's hitting the flange and not the driveshaft itself

HELP PLEASE

Well if you're so sure that the nut should be the other way around, then get a hacksaw, chop it off, and put a new one on.

It might be easier in the long run to get another bolt. You can cut the head off of the existing and pull it out the other way.

Just a quick passing thought......

That looks just like American and Japanese engineering. They forget how easily stuff goes together on the assembly line, but do notthink aboutthe person who has to repair it after it leaves the factory.

I wish I had an extra bolt or I'd be out sawing away right now

Previous owners handywork of routing coolant/fuel lines to the vegetable oil tank in the trunk
Really shoddy routing and get this, he used metal braces in places and padded them with HAY (ya, what horses eat) so they didn't rub

Removing the flex disc, just undo all the bolts? I really am a newbie mechanic, I'm like an ape with a newly discovered wrench. ME FIX CAR

Yes, just remove all the bolts. 10 minutes. Check the condition of the flexdisc while it is disconnected. If bad, replace.

Alright, will do

10 minutes may be optimistic. Seems like any bolt on this car requires a couple hours soak in PB Blaster and a 10 foot breaker bar!

Should've never bought a car that came from New Jersey

I had the same issue with the right side front upper controll arm bushing bolt. It came out, but no way it would have gone back in as I was lining everything up. It was put back in from the front of the tower this time.

Similar deal with alt bracket bolt on the '82 240. Once finally out, inserted from front, double nutted on back. Were this to come out, would destroy fan. So, I'll cut 'em some slack. May be similar thought. Were you able to cut and remove that bolt, you should still be able to measure threads, size, pitch and maybe length too. Good luck. See my thread on alt belts CORRECT SIZE... on the soaking part. hotwheelbill, I did not have any difficulty dealing with UCA on my '82 300 D, only did driver side tho.
