1980 HJ47 RHD Diesel Landcruiser "Troopy"

Anyone have any knowledge???

I am assuming (fingers crossed) that the issuses are a Diesel thing and not a "Troopy" thing.
I have done a lot of trouble shooting but might be forgetting something, anyways I trust you guys as and have always found what I needed for Greasil, am hoping that I can get the Col back on the road permently!!
He has to make a long drive to Costa Rica and needs to be in tip top shape before hand.
Thanks in advance for anyone helping!!
Thanks,
Tara

Diesel help is what we do, but we need to know what kind of problems you are having, and specifically what info you need.

First remove the engine, take a good look around it and report back what you see. I'm sure someone will know what the problem is.

There is an excellent Toyota Land Cruiser forum similar to this one. Lots of knowlegdable and helpful DIYers and tech moderators like here.
http://forum.ih8mud.com/index.php

Similar categories (i.e., diesels) and excellent search engine. Good luck!

You need to perform what's called a Toyotectomy.

Step 1: Remove the Toyota from the shop.
Step 2: Replace it with a Mercedes 300GD.
Step 3: Enjoy a real truck.

yea, I belong to that forum (*ih8mud) as well but you guys are much more fun and seem to be much more knowledgable.
As for Mr. Smart ass..lol
I just did not want to waste my time nor anyone elses if noone wanted to play name that problem.

Ok. Here goes it.

Bought it off of sleezbay so I know I will get a couple of spankins for that...grinz
Have had the Troopy for about six months using it as the daily driver and have had no problems. I had it inspected, a minor oil leak was fixed. Mech said no reason to check compression as everything seemed to be in top working condition tight and orig, supporting the 70,000 mile P.O quoted on Engine.

Taking him out for a drive one day the Col stooped running. Having never let the Fuel gauge get that low I thought the gauge must not be that accurate and that I ran it out of fuel. Get Fuel..../Prime etc no start. When It Stopped I also noticed an electrical smell and found a few melted wires. Tow Home.
Seemed like we had two problems Fuel Delivery and the melted wires. Fixed Wiring, Find what is called the sedimenter, (fuel/water seperator)cleaned that out really good, put it back on. Purged injectors of air and finally got it to roar to life whoohooo!!!!

Go back out later to take him out and as soon as I turn the key back to glow the lil coil indicator light gets so hot and bright red I crank it immediatly for fear of burning something else up(I dunno) instead of letting it glow the normal 15 sec. NUTTIN.. Fuse? Check fuses. Starter fuse has blown??? Go to a 25 fuse, try this again. No glow indicator light will come on now but I can hear the relay so I know it is going to fire and it does.
3hrs later.. 10 pm 70 degrees go to take him out again Mind you the indicator light is not working so I count to 20 and try to crank, hear the glow plug relay click, Engine is trying to turn over but once again it "sounds" like it is not getting enough fuel. No air in injector lines and have tracked down the fuel line, Most if which is metal. No leaks.
4 days have passed since I have driven the Col and have gotten him to start a few times, only when it is pretty hot in the 90's or above. I am pretty sure it has not started twice in a row now.
Things that have been tested:
Glow Plug relay
Glow Plug impedence according to shop manual is within spec.
Glow plug rail is seated properly for good connection.
BUT... Testing continuity of Glow on the Ignition Swith fails to match Manual, however is activating Glow Plug Relay.
Misc:
Blows a fair amount of white smoke apon start up but quickly dissapates.
Runs like a champ once started.
Burned what I thought what excessive oil since my Benzo burns almost nil, but that has lighted up since oil leak was fixed.

That being all babbled out ( sorry for being long winded, figured I would hopefully save the extra banter)
When I first smelled it running I immediatly was taken back to being a kid and hearing my Pappa say.... "That car needs or has worn rings".
I asked the PO if he knew why it smelled that way he looked at me and said rings???
(HMMMMM)
Me being a Jill of all trades and master of none left it at that and continued to do the best inspection my Boyfriend and I could.

Ok....... Have only one more day that I can be greasy this week so send me to work gentlemen

THANKS SO MUCH,
Still being a Diesel newbie and an average?? wrench it is nice to have souch a source to turn to.

Sounds like the glow plugs are not glowing. I'd run 12 volts directly from the battery to the glow plugs for a few seconds and see if it fires up ok. If it does, the problem probably lies upstream in the glow circuit somewhere.

I have an 86 HJ60, That HJ47 is a 24 Volt truck right, I think you have got an electrical problem, the no start is probably not glows, as the 2H fires to life without them in almost all conditions. Im thinking EDIC motor,

The two batteries in your truck are wired in series or parrallel, My thought is the voltage regulator. melted wires is a bad sign.

did you post in the diesel section of Ih8mud?

The guys there know their stuff.

you should ditch the sedimenter, its junk,

check the battery connections, check you fuseable links.
