Yeah, they're perfectly good "modern" cars, I just don't think they are very interesting. For the cost of a CDI I could buy two or three interesting old cars, much more fun. If you like the new ones you should buy one, but I'll have to pass.

Our 300D's feel like a garden tractor after driving a Taurus or Impala or Buick, etc...... All a CDI really has going for it is today's luxury and technology wrapped around a diesel power plant. But it still looks similar to a Taurus or Hyundai. Lots of $ for that......

Sad, but true. If I had any interest in buying a new car (which I don't), I really don't think I would buy a new benz, they just look too generic. I honestly can't think of any (non-exotic) new car that I want, they all look like they came out of the same wind tunnel.

LOL. I can't wait until the WVO crowd starts hacking up hondas instead. I really don't think the "alternative fuel" fad is having that much effect on the prices (except at the very low end), I just think that these cars are getting old enough that the real junkers are starting to die out.

I thought I could use an old MB as a daily driver but it wasn't dependable enough without losing my free time or weekends to wrenching on it. It got to a point where I no longer enjoyed wrenching. So I got a Honda. Now I can work on my MB's when I feel like it and I feel like I enjoy it again.

I understand, but it's really just a matter of how much time/money you're willing to spend it to make it "dependable." I drove my 300D from CO to WA state over the weekend, two weeks ago I was in TX, the week before I was in MN, etc. (about 40K miles per year). Now, if it had a computer I'd be worried.

I was spending quite a bit of both. It did have a computer to but it was nothing that kept the car from running. It did play havoc on the tachometer though.

The "computer" in your 85 is pretty harmless, I don't like cars with ECUs, I just don't trust anything I can't fix with a screwdriver, some wrenches, and duck tape.

Eventually you just end up replacing all the moving parts, then you have a new car.

Back to the original subject of this thread. Last spring I paid $3500 for my '85 300CD 200,000 miles, everything, yes everything works, A/C, cruise, windows, sunroof, dash lights, heater, beautiful interior (no rips or tears) CCU etc, etc. 2 minor rust spots, paint is starting to fade on the roof & hood. Thought I paid $500-$1000 too much back then. Now that I've been driving it for almost 6 months I'm happy.

I'm selling an 82 300SD with 68k miles for $8,200 via local paper and craiglist. when I bought it a year ago it had been sitting awhile and I had to replace a front tranny seal as a result. It was expensive.

This spring, I bought a 1982 CD with 71K on it for $8K.
Used regularly, but sparingly. (He had 5 or 6 Mercedes.)

Worth every penny.
