Whats a 84 300CD with 43,000mi worth?

What would you guys offer a guy for a 1984 300CD with 43,000 origional miles? The car is garage kept and the owner has owned the car since the mid 80's and doesn't drive it much. The car is NOT currently for sale.

Cars that sit can cost more than cars that regularly move. Condition is everything for a car like that. Then, what you get for it is directly related to how you sell it.

Private party ads - $12,000 low and $15,000 high
Ebay with excellent ad - $15,000 low and $17,000 high

My guesses.

Unless all the rubber has been replaced recently, I would not offer more than 10k on a sitting car.

If most of the rubbers are new maybe 12-13k not more, this is not a collectible (yet), not even an antique (yet) there is no reason to pay a premium over a 130000mi diesel of same vintage and condition.

Now remember that those cars have jumped in price recently because of the granola-fashion factor of the alternative fuel... In 1 or 2 years new modern diesel are going to flock american shores and these babies are going to take a wash when all the granolas move to a diesel accord.

At 10k is it a fair buy, at 7-9k it is an investment that can get a very quick return, beyond 12k it is a pleasure buy.

It all depends on condition, probably someplace between $10K and $20K. I saw one '84 300CD with 34K miles change hands for $25K (twice over the last couple of years), but it was just about perfect. I just saw a decent '84 300D driver with about 120K miles sell for $12K a few weeks ago (pretty good condition, but not perfect).

$5K max.........

Unless you can replace all the rubber parts yourself.

The car is STILL 23 years old.

How long since all the fluids have been changed?

Are you owning to drive or owning to flip?

Salty weather environment? I don't care if it has been garaged. It came in full of road salt than sat?

Look at it with a critical eye like it is on a dealers lot.

In 2001 we paid $4500 for our 77 300d with 55k on it. Always garaged, original owner. Haven't had any problems with the rubber parts. Changed out what I think were the original belts last week.

Maybe it's just me, but even if pristine, these cars simply aren't worth the values that are getting tossed around. Or the values being paid on ebay. We love 'em, but they just aren't worth that kind of $$.
Just my opinion......

Disconnect the line to the fuel pump and offer $300 to take it away.

(People used to do that all the time at auctions, to get the price down on them. It's why you can't open the hood anymore on them sometimes, nowadays, 'cause they got wise.)

Seriously, look at it as just another hunk of metal with eye towards detecting rust and rot. Rubber bits can simply shrink, dry out, or rot. the aircon better work.

Those cars are notorious for odometer failures, so be sure there are records to back up the car's claimed mileage.

Maybe an $8,000 car if it's really nice, has the records and doesn't need anything, runs good, no rust and blows cold air.

It IS 23 years old, in the end, when all is said and done.

Well, they're worth whatever folks are willing to pay for them. Is a new ricer worth $25K, or is some POS pick-up truck worth $45K? I would certainly pay $20K for an excellent 61x diesel before I paid $60K for a new CDI.

At least the $60K CDI has a warranty. I'm sure you'd think differently after driving one.

I've driven a few newer benz, if I really wanted one I would buy one. Personally, I'm not willing to write a $60K check for the privilege of having a warrantee and driving a car that looks like every other car in my neighborhood.

I drove a CDI when they it came out. I was impressed by it, especially afterward, when I drove my 85 300D home. My 300D felt like driving a garden tractor after my drive of the CDI.
