Anyone know of an inexpensive way to ship an engine?

I may be able to get HenryDupont's turbo diesel engine but it all depends if I can get get it shipped inexpensively enough. We're trying to work on it on both ends.
I need to get his engine over to WA state from TN.
After getting quotes on machine shop work on my engine, I can't justify spending so much on a rebuild. It's not worth it. I can find a good running car for the amount of money I'd end up sinking into getting the 300D going again. I can't find any running engines locally for any reasonable amount of money either.
Anyone know of any suggestions for a good shipper?

A guy I work with had a Lexus engine shipped via Forward Air once. He said it was pretty cheap. If I remember correctly, it had to be in a shipping crate, not just palletized but it was uber cheap. And they only go depot to depot, not door to door so someone has to drop it off and pick it up as they don't drop off stuff anywhere. May still be worth it, though. Good luck.

I've shipped engines via Forward Air on a pallet. Not expensive. Must have a depot near you.

Try the home moving companies, just for grins. It's a small enough item and doesn't weigh that much compared to what they're used to moving. If you let them low-priority the engine and deliver it next time they have a truck headed that way, you might find it cheaper than you expect.

Cheers, John

To have the best chance of success--

Pay Henry a few bucks extra to drain any fluids that aren't already drained -- this avoids arguments over fire safety, hazardous waste spills, etc.

Likewise, pay him to crate the engine and deliver it to the shipper's dock.

Ship the engine to the shipper's location nearest you and go pick it up when it arrives. The shipper will probably want it off of his dock within 24 hours to avoid extra fees.

Let us know what works out -- one of us may want to do the same thing some day.

I sent him the link to this thread. We've both got Forward Air locations near us.
We'll see what they'll want to ship the engine.
I'm going to keep my fingers crossed on this.

I shipped an Atomic 4 flathead sailboat engine with Forward Air about 6 yrs ago from Florida to Denver. Cost about $125 as I recall. Transmission was included. It was tied down with rope to a pallet.

This is all sounding very good. With today's fuel costs maybe it'll cost $200. Still would be a deal.

Hmm, I wonder if you could "NEW TRASHBAG" it... by that I mean load up several hundred trash bags with helium and connect a remote control to it and have it fly here on it's own... some guy did it to himself in a lawn chair...

I think the cost of the amount of cu. ft. of helium you would need to lift it you would easily out spend the cost of shipping it.

OK the latest info I have is that Forward Air needs to have the engine crated. This is beginning to sound like it's going to be a PITA with them. Anyone have any other suggestions to get an engine shipped?

Dude, a crate is easy.. just put the thing on the pallet, strap it down.. take some 2x4's make a cube and slap some 1/4" plywood around the sides... I sometimes I have to make crates at my warehouse job...

It'd be easy for me but Henry's the one who would need to do it and he doesn't have the time nor skills to do it.
