Red face Ok... Im stupid

I know that i will be told to SEARCH! but... I pulled down the odometer on my 240d and found no problems. It will go to like 39.9 48.9 22.9 and just quit. so i thought that the gears were worn. I found nothing work no slipped axle and no broken parts i ran it on my drill for about twenty miles after a good greasing and work great reinstalled it worked great And this morning i looked down to check my millage and i was stuck at 69.9 again. Any clues? No visable Problems.

Wow, I'd say that the cable to the speedo linkage may not be right, or the cable itself may be the problem, but the fact that it stops on numbers ending in 9 is kinda weird....maybe your drill wasn't turning at a similar speed as your car would in the real world (RL)??? and that you really do have a problem but since the drill was turning too fast (or too slowly) you couldn't recreate the problem?

I've found that temperature seems to effect the functionality of the odometer. For instance in the winter the odo would work fine until it got warmed up. It seemed to do progressively worse as the weather warmed up. There is no doubt IMHO that you need scuff up the shaft that drives the tumbler. I found that if your pretty agressive and make some deep grooves in the shaft, you can do it without loctite, and avoid the possibility of gluing things together.

the shaft is slipping on one of the gears. and it works until one or more 9's line up and provide enough resistance to prevent turning.

same thing happened to me, I ran the speedo w/ a drill and it ran fine, but started slipping after installed in the car Definitely temperature related.

its the trip odometer that causes the main odometer to fail, a quick and dirty method is to remove the small spur gear that connects the trip odo to the main odo, then your main odo will run fine, otherwise its the 'locktite on a toothpick method'

I didn't trust the locktite method, because it seemed shotty.

I removed the gear from the shaft and very VERY lightly "knurled" the shaft with pliers. It DOES NOT TAKE MUCH, the steel seems to be very mild. I then had to really push that gear on, and it was NOT gonna spin after that. I've put thousands on it with no problem since.

Exactly, when the tumbler hits 9, the little pin engages to the previous wheel in line to spin it to the next count up, causing increased load. Turning it with the drill probably either overpowered it, or created a different loading on the gears/shaft.

I had success on mine without loctite, I used a pin punch, and struck it 2 or 3 times in the same spot to make a good impression. As the punch makes a hole, it also creates a ridged crown of metal around it, which acts to grab the gear. Has worked well for me now for a year.
I could see how temp would affect them, as the plastic gear heats and expands, it would be more prone to slip on that smooth factory shaft. (plastic expands faster/greater than steel)

That's exactly what I did with mine, it's been OK for about 100K miles now.
