1 and 2 gear only after valve adjustment???

Did my first valve adjustment. After getting things back together and doing a test drive I only have 1 and 2 gear. Vacuum lines seem OK. What am I missing??

You've got the linkage to the Bowden cable screwed up. The cable is probably all the way out and it's not being modulated by the linkage.

AH! That would be the cable that goes to the transmission from the linkage? The plastic part right behind the boot was not seated and was out about 1/2 inch. Gonna give that a try.

Thanks for the quick response!!!!

The plastic part must snap into the steel bracket otherwise the cable won't move.

Don't know if I showed you mine or not at the GTG. The one that was partially melted by an overcharging alternator. Still have to replace it one of these days.

Is it possible that this is the same problem I've been having? I haven't redone the valves, but they might have been screwed up. (My car sat for almost a decade as a parts car down in TN, before some guy bought it and brought it to NY on a trailer and got it running. However, he said that he'd had problems with the trans., and he had barely moved it. He also didn't know too much about these engines, so he may not have looked at this?)

When a vehicle sits for any length of time.......anything is possible.

Find the Bowden cable under the hood and see if it moves properly with the rack.
