Parts help, oil cooler lines

Can someone help confirm part numbers for both oil cooler hoses? 1982 240D. Both hoses connect at the bottom of the oil cooler. Everything I read refers to an upper and lower hose. Is this upper and lower in relation to the filter housing or something else?

Links to pics would be great!

Thanks,

Clay

Is this for the engine or the tranny? the 240 did not come with a factory engine oil cooler, which does have upper and lower hoses.

Engine

Yes, it is for the engine oil. I can’t believe that this is an “add on”. The stock radiator (water) has a place for the cooler to mount on it, there is space in the front for air flow over the oil cooler, all of the fittings to route/secure the lines are a part of the system, the oil filter holder thing has the ports for the line connections, etc. Nothing looks “rigged|”

This car has A/C. I thought I read somewhere that 240D’s with factory A/C came with oil coolers.

Anyone else?

Thanks,

Clay

ps Thanks for the confirm Craig. I am ordering these parts here in Mexico, so I want to make sure I get it right the first time. It's going to be enough of a hassle to get them once.

Wow, learn something new every day. When did the 240 come with an oil cooler?

You are correct, it's factory installed. I also don't know what the "upper" and "lower" descriptions mean, I would call phil to get the correct part.

I'm not sure, but apparently the 82 and 83 U.S. cars with AC had them. I think I've heard that the euros did not have AC or an oil cooler, but I may be wrong.

I am in Mexico for a while. 800 and 888 numbers don't work from here. Also, hate to call and bother Phil, when I have no way to order the parts from him for delivery to Mexico.

Anyone can confirm part numbers for the hoses?

Thanks,

Clay

If your 82 240D is like my 83 240D, then both hoses go to the bottom of the oil cooler. Do you have a Mercedes dealer in Mexico you can call on?

Good news is the job should be much easier on the 240D than an 83 300D turbo with A/C where I replaced the lines a month ago. From looking at the 240D, there is almost nothing in the way in comparison. You may not even have to disconnect the engine mount and jack up the engine. Some tips I've read to make the job easier (no personal experience tho) is to remove the oil cooler and get the lines out from the front, or remove the filter housing (need a new gasket). But you may have to do neither because there is so much room to work with.

Dealer here said "we don't work on diesels and can't get parts for them" Nice.

Surprisingly, although small cars are the norm here for better fuel economy, you don’t see many diesel cars. I have seen one 190D and one Beetle TDI here in the last year. All trucks are diesel, of course, just no cars.

Tools are an issue for me here, but I have found a good indy. He does not know diesels, but between the Haynes manual, the MB CD, and this forum, we do OK.

He can get the parts “smuggled” in, but we want to make sure we order the right thing. Getting the parts the “legal” way can add up to 100% to the value of the part, if you consider duty and freight

Just hoping someone with access to the correct part information could post.

Thanks,

Clay
