617 ALDA Screw All the Way Out, No Smoke
 
Following advice in previous posts, I was going to screw the ALDA screw out until it stopped gaining power and started smoking alot. Mine is now all the way out and I think it smokes less now. What does this mean? other than that I need a boost controller so I could just remove the stupid thing.

Mine didnt smoke either. Oh maybe a little white smoke. White I saw white I turned it in a little for fuel mileage. But I rarely see any black smoke.

You dont need a boost controller to remove the alda. The alda adjusts fuel based on boost and should be the LAST thing you tinker with. Have you gained any more power? Have you checked your linkage? If your not getting any smoke your not getting enough fuel and this is probably because your linkage needs adjusting, which should have been the FIRST thing you checked. A properly tuned ALDA on a stock 617.95x shouldn't be tampered with.

By smoke... do you mean white or black?

And yes I am adjusting my linkage!

Some black smoke is normal at WOT as the turbo spools up, pressure builds, and the ALDA allows for more fuel. Like I said ALDA should be the last thing you adjust, after linkage, filters, injectors, PC's, wastegate etc.

OK I had someone follow me and yes I do have a little black smoke at WOT.

My problem since I bought the car has been the difference in performance and starting at different elevations. It starts in the cold and drives fine at sea level. Up here though, it did not start when colder than 40F unless plugged in and had half the power. After ALDA adjustment, it always starts when cold and has sea level power. The next thing to change is the throttle pivot bushing. Then I can adjust the linkage.

I was under the impression that once the ALDA is removed, the overboost solenoid is also disabled hence the need for a boost controller. I would appreciate being corrected if I am wrong though.

A boost controller is just a simple method of raising the boost above the 8-10psi stock pressure.

So if I remove the ALDA, plug the vac line, the overboost soleniod will still limit the max boost at stock psi?

No, the turbo's wastegate is what limits boost. The ALDA is an emissions control device that prevents black smoke out the tailpipe. The overboost solenoid is only used if the wastegate fails and boost exceeds 16psi. With the ALDA removed, there is no point in leaving the overboost solenoid installed.
