Ahh, so I get to look forward to this same issue then when I finally do get into the details of getting the 82 to run...time to begin forming a plan....

China has officially hit the roads!!!! The young lass is still a little rough around some of the edges, but I took here up and down the road several times this evening. And she has just an amazingly smooth idle. The idle knob was split, so I put on one that I had and that cable won't turn a lick. Will try to free that up tomorrow after I go spray that nasty old engine from Scar off. But as ugly as it looks, it really idles and runs nicely. Scar also used to overheat, but the new thermostat obviously did the trick.
I started off by cobbling the two accelerator linkages together.

Even though they were different in style and parts, the balls for the linkage cups were all in the same places, so the adjustable linkage rods did not require adjustment. Yay! {fyi, that linkage from firewall is what came originally on this car. The part connected to valve cover, that contains shutoff arm and areas for cruise and idle cable is from orig. engine}

My fuel line conglomeration.

I wondered why that powersteering pump was making so much noise.

All lights worked, all blinkers blinked. Has clear fogs, though.....:(

The Squash was nice enough to donate his battery to China for now.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...D/China094.jpg

One will get a new battery at some point. China has some issues with battery tray, and a hole eaten through underneath, luckily into wheel well and not firewall.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...D/China093.jpg

I just wire brushed the battery tray and sprayed over the rust with some silver primer. Will look for new tray, but wanted to cover the rust for now.....

A couple issues:
She shuts off with a slow and violent ramp-down process, just a painful dying lurch. Vac system to door locks not hooked up, so will disconnect the green line to whatever climate control pods there are in a 240.
Next, after the car reached 80 degrees, I turned on the heat to further burp the cooling system, and I have no heat at all. Surprising. Not sure about that one yet.
Oh, and the compressor comes on when I turn the AC on!. Temp didn't get that cold {only 75 psi resting pressure at 85 degrees a while back, so charge is low. Good pressure test though, as it has held 75 for almost 2 years.}
However, while AC was on, something popped or whammed or made some kind of horrible noise from under dash area I think. It made me literally jump and really startled me. Turned off AC quickly, but turned it back on later with no issues. Weird. Very jolting......
I have straight water in radiator and engine for now. Need to flush a few times to clean out. Need some citric acid for several of my cars. Guess I'll ask Henry where to get some. :D
More to follow in the story, but a great feeling to turn the key, let it glow {although there is NO glow plug light}, and have it start right up FIRST TIME!

Congrats!
Just think how fast it would have gone had you not taken all those pics.

Looks like a very professional job.

What did you do with those pesky little rubber parts in the throttle linkage right above the ipump?

That hairipin in there somehow does not look factory but does look good.

That entire setup is in fact factory. It has always amazed me the different linkage setups these cars have over their production run.
The linkage from the firewall to the portion that connects the IP linkages are all original to China, a 1980 model. It all bolted up to the '81 engine with out needing an adjustment to any of the linkage lengths.
I'm not sure what rubber parts above the pump you are referring to.

t walgamuth 07-28-2007 01:44 PM

In that area above the pump where you have the hairpin there are some rubber isolation parts that like to go bad. We have never had much luck getting replacment parts for them. Your setup looks very good.

Road test today......

Well, after half a day of mowing and weedeating, it was time to dork around with China.
The very first thing I did was get some quarters together and head for the carwash. Wasn't worried about washing the outside, the paint looks way better in pics than it actually is. Very very faded. But that engine bay......:(
The car drives really well, but for some reason it is very hard to be smooth on the 2nd gear shift. Has this bucking tendency that I am having a hard time smoothing out with clutch feathering, accelerator position, etc..... It'll get there. The steering is easy, doesn't make front end noises, and tracks nice and straight. The shifter seems smoother than the Squash. But the shifter knob is horrible. Badly deteriorating and I can't find another one. 1980 and prior have a different shifter handle than 81-83 wouldn't you know. They attach different, and lower down in the shifter assy.
I used the engine cleaner extensively at the carwash, and I really like how well it works. I have a pressure washer at the house, but no place really for all the residue to wash to.
Here is a before shot:

And after:

Before:

After:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...D/China104.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...D/China105.jpg

Now, there is only so much that can be done on Scar's ugly little engine, but it is at least cleaner than it was.......

JimmyL 07-29-2007 12:09 AM

A couple issues of note.
First, on the way home, there is a nice straight shot of road at least a 1/2 or 3/4 miles long. Good place to, er, blow out the carbon, so to speak. Well, somebody was riding a horse near the first part, but after I passed I let go of China's reins and got on down the road! She was accelerating about as well as a 240 can. I was in third, just passing 55mph, and noticing that the engine didn't seem as wound-out at this point as the Squash would be. Then it happened!!:eek: I just knew that I threw a rod. It was a most horrible noise, very metalic in nature, and VERY out of the ordinary. I slowed down, eyeballed the oil pressure. 3 bar. Whew! Temp gauge was climbing up towards 95-100, but more on that later.
No noises, smooth idle, oil pressure good, not spilling fluids. All I can think of is that I ran over something, which is doubtful as it would have been visible I imagine, or maybe I left some sort of tool under the hood, and it finally fell out and did some bouncing. I'm still perplexed. Couldn't see anything that was missing, but who knows. Went back down the road and didn't see anything. Grass off the side of the road was fairly tall, so if it slid in there I won't be finding it.
Needless to say, I had to pry my butt off the seat when I got home. Somehow it had a hold of the seat.....:o
Here is my issue. It is climbing up to 100 degrees. This is with ambient temp around 88-90, and the AC on. {yes, AC! :D} Now, there is a new thermostat, and the radiator looked great inside. Very very clean! Now, this may be the reason, yall tell me. I am running straight water in the radiator and block, no antifreeze yet. Scar's radiator and old thermostat were rather ugly, so I will need to flush it a few times.
With just water, could that be the reason for the temp climb?

Car had 75psi of freon at "rest" when temps were in mid 80's. Compressor would come on when I turned on AC, so I had about 3/4 of a can of R134a in the garage, still hooked up to filler hose. Pumped that in, went around the roads a bit after the engine cooled, and got 60 degrees out of the vents. I am certainly still low of freon, but what a nice stroke of luck! Pulling/installing the engines around the AC stuff was a pain, but worth it!
Now to get the car titled, registered, insured and inspected. $$$$$
