I had what I thought was an amazing occurrence tonight. Me, wife, 11 y.o. daughter and her friend were going to the movie this evening. My wife actually said "Why don't we take one of your Mercedes?".
I was shocked! Few spouses hate these old Mercedes more than my concubinal apparatus. She asked if "the blue one" had a good heater. I said sure, almost 150 degrees out of the vents. She says "good, that will be a better car to take in case somebody is vandalizing cars at the movie theater"!
I knew something was up when she wanted to take a Mercedes.....

My wife wanted to ride in the 300TD down to Northern VA last week because she has noticed fewer people tailgate it than her Subaru. There is nothing like the smell of diesel exhaust to get people to keep a reasonable following distance.

No, she is not amused any time her life has to cross paths with the "Fleet".
Maybe in the future when I end up with a W124 it won't be so bad.
And as I've said before, is it really that bad to have cars the wife doesn't like to be in????

Loved the entire story...just finished actually. I read aloud the part about taking the car by the nursing home...the family loved it. Thanks for sharing the good and the bad...the post was fantastic. I think I've enjoyed this post more than any others so far!

Great work!

How did you get at the 2 top transmission to motor bolts. When I pulled mine I couldn't get em so I pulled out the whole lot at an extreme angle. I managed to smash a few items in the bay because of this.

Thank you very much Andy for the kind words. I can't hardly express how nice the folks were that I bought China from. And when you work with older folks I think it really shows a "heart for service". She was genuinely moved by seeing China running, and that was before I polished her up. That is the main reason I am keeping China and selling my much nicer 240. I am emotionally attached.

The are really easy on a 240D. They are one cylinder farther away from the firewall than a 300D.....

Gather all extension bars you manage to find (I had at least 2.5 feet) and use one universal joint, this will do the trick.
First, the 13mm socket (or is it another size? Don't remember right now), then a 10" extension bar so you'll clear the transmission bell, then the u-joint and rest of the extensions.. until you clear the transmission.

Exclamation What is that smell??????

Well, the lovely concubinal apparatus and I were going to go see the new Star Trek movie yesterday evening. It had been raining and her car was clean, so I recommended we take China. That is generally OK as her and my youngest daughter don't mind China at all.
Well, we got in the car, closed the door, went to fasten our seatbelts while the glow plugs were doing there thing, looked at each other, I turned off the ignition, removed the keys and we bailed out of the car.
Officer, we have a dead body somewhere!!! Holy buckets!!!!!
There were a few mouse droppings on the carpet and in the console carpet area.
So, we take the white wagon to the movies and saw one AWESOME Star Trek movie!!
Fast forward to today. I pulled China up to the garage and removed all the carpet which I sprayed off with the hose and set out to dry. I removed the passenger side kick panel and there was a wad of foam made into kind of a nest. Cleaned that out. Then I decided to remove the blower fan.

Well, I definitely found "a" culprit. I'm hoping it is "the" culprit.

The blower was making a funny noise when I tried it prior to removal, and I guess we know why.

I removed it, and some of the fur was stuck to the squirrel cage, which I cleaned off quite vigorously. Then of course I oiled the fan bushings. Habit.
Poor little guy.

Poor China!
Sheesh, now I just hope the smell dissipates quickly. WOW!!

Ouch!!

Good to see a post, though this is not the topic I'd have wished for you to have to show us!! I am sorry. But I know the smell will get better. Spray a little cheap vodka around the car a few times and that'll take care of the last of the scent.

We've been there -- Ilse, our silver 300D that had the engine replacement that took foever, had a mouse make a whiz pool in one of the vents. Heat was really fragrant, and we had to replace the vebt tube.

Here in the woods, it's a standard hazard. We try to remember, when we're taking one of the fleet off line for a bit, to toss several dryer sheets around -- under the carpet, under the dash, under the hood, etc. It seems to work pretty well, at least for our country field mice.

The kangaroo rats, aka packrats, (who are too cute for words, darn it!) have earned our respect. They really do replace shiny things with other interesting bits and pieces, and they're surprisingly smart. We had some tenants for a few months early on -- free housing of a primitive sort (a house with power, but outdoor plumbing and much work needed -- it had sat vacant for decades) in exchange for work. There had been a nest, filled with shiny bits when they moved in, so we knew the kangaroo rats had been the only occupants for a while prior to these folks.

While we'd known the husband for some years as a great seasonal employee, his then-recent choice of concubinal apparatus was far more whiner than worker, which seemed to have a deleterious effect on his ability to get much done. She regalled us daily with how hard a worker she was and how much she'd done in their previous home in Washington state, but talk -- and stories of how she'd forgotten how backward/hot/unconfortable/uncivilized Texas was -- was about we got from her.

One night while watching TV, they heard something at the front door. Wifey got up and opened the door, expecting to see John or I, but no one was there. She shut the door and went back to the TV.

10 minutes later, same sound -- sort of a scratching. This time, when she opened the door, she looked down, and saw a kangaroo rat, on the porch, sitting up on his hind legs in the pose that gave them the name 'kangaroo,' staring up at her with those enormous eyes, flipping that tufted tail in the air like a question mark. She screamed and slammed the door.

Poor little guy probably wanted to get to his home (and his stuff! How like us all!!). Heck, he was probably born there. Later in the evening, she couldn't stand the suspense, and opened the door again. He was still there, and raced past her into the house. Wild woman with a broom chased him down and whacked him to death.

Next morning she announced that they were moving back to Washington state. We gave the rat an honorable burial, thanked his little spirit for our liberation from an untenable relationship, and have never had any problems with them -- that house currently serves as storage, including most of our spare MB parts and pieces, and they've left stuff alone. I don't think they consort with the field mice, so since the kangaroo rats have prior claim to the space -- and a very small and clean nest where it always was -- we seem to have good guards for our goodies. Even the cat and dog seem to have an understanding with them, since we get gifts of moles, voles, field mice, and the like, but never a kangaroo rat.

That's my story for the night. Little to do with Benzes, but what can I say? Sometimes one just rambles. Hope all is well in your world otherwise.

Sunny

Reminds me a bit of "Daylight" the Stallone movie of the 90s.

Safe to say he's dead, Jim.

You might need a few more balance clips to offset that weight.
