Don't let it flip into the fan (be careful)

i got a question for this, what can we understand by this test, if it moves around what can we do to prevent this.

That combustion gasses are getting past the rings.

The reason for the engine dying is the buildup of pressure inside the crankcase. An engine with 0 blowby will not die with this test.

Diesels do smoke, so veg oil will not make it smoke less.

Hmmm, sounds like it would be a major bummer to blow a seal. How are the odds on this?
As for the oil separator, it's the apparatus in the center of the air filter housing that the breather hose attaches to? What can go wrong with those?
Thanks again,
Jim

I have wondered the same thing.

Blow-By curioisty questions

Basically its a quick metric of general engine health. If theres tons of blow by, its generally a negative thing, if there isn't too much, its generally positive. How good or bad different levels of blow by are is uncertain.

Cars that have lots of blow can run great, cars with no blow by could have something else wrong.

The injector return hoses don't appear to be leaking, I replaced the one that was. Now that I look at it, cleaning out the EGR does appear to have made some improvement.
Can one check the timing easily oneself?
Hopefully this'll come together soon...gonna do the big stuff this weekend.
Thanks again!
Jim
Running rough (more than a bit of rattling) can be due to injectors or delivery valves. Diesel Purge may resolve some of this but not always. Cracking loose the fuel line at each injector, while running, and checking to see if it has an effect on idle will usually point to a problem injector.

Timing is not too difficult but you will need the tools to do it. A search on "drip method" will give you an idea. A good shop (someone familiar with MB diesels) should be able to check it in about an hour's labor.

On another note, a leaking EGR valve might cause this but I'm not sure how much. Cleaning it to get a good seal, then disabling it with a BB in the vacuum line (for testing purposes) might resolve furthur problems there.

One last question, it was suggested to me that running down the tank, then loading in a few gals of vegetable oil sometimes can be a quick fix for smoking. Any reason this might be a bad idea?
Jim
The oil separator is located in the air cleaner. I've never pulled mine apart because it seems to work, but I've heard where removing, cleaning and putting back together can get things in order. A little search on the subject should turn some stuff up.

Ain't no way you should load in a few gallons of veggie without a separate tank to heat it in. Now some bio will flush things out like metamucil. Caution, though, to take care of fuel filters. Bio clogs things for a while.
