EGR tube fell out
So I have a 1981 240D. One day my car started making so much noise it astounded even me, and I'm used to driving the loudest car on the road. A car so loud that when I broke the muffler off there was no noticeable difference.
So I figured I was in danger of a problem if I happened to drive past any John Q Law. I took it to Midas. They took a look and said I needed an EGR tube, it had apparently fallen out. The old guy there said that there was nothing he could do for me unless I brought him the tube. Apparently there is some apparatus that does something on the exhaust side, that item is still in place. I went down to Benz Friendz, that is where I go if I need a used part here in Seattle. They have some 180 motors in their basement there, we could only find 1 tube. From a 300D. I took it home, discovered that any monkey could change it as it just had 2 clamps held on with 7/16ths nuts. I tried to put it in and to my dismay it was too short. I guess the 300D motor is bigger so the tube doesn't need to be so long. I dunno. So. I am stuck. I dont know where to find one. I can't find one on the internet, I have tried a few options and haven't even turned up an out of stock option. It just doesn't seem to exist in the online catalogs. If anyone could point me to somewhere that might have such an item I would appreciate it. And if anyone is in need of an EGR tube + whatever apparatus it is at the end of it (valve? switch? I dunno, as I said I'm not a mechanic) let me know. Wouldn't hurt to have an extra in my opinion, one day you might find your 300D loud as a jet engine too. edit: by the way, if you happen to run a shop and want to trade just the 240D tube for my 300D tube + whatever it is, by all means let me know! |

Just make a block off disk for the exhaust side and plug the vacuum line to the EGR.
Your engine will be happier without the EGR. |

Looks very well made. Much nicer than the sheetmetal stock I've used for my own experiments.

Send me an e-mail.
I have a kit that will eliminate the EGR completely. I should function on the 616 as well, although I don't think anyone has tried it yet. |

On my old '82 240, the valve was located on the passenger fender, can't remember tube location. Just plugging off should suffice.

as I said, I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination. I was under the impression you couldn't just plug the hole as that was the only exit for exhaust from that part of the engine. I will go get my flashlight and take another look under the hood.
