stop lever won't stop engine
... and when I turn off the key it continues to run. Applying vacuum to the switch on the end of the IP shuts it down. How do I test the ignition switch?
Thanks! rr |

What year and model car do you have? Might add it to your signature so its alwasy available to see. Do you have an idle adjust cable? Sometimes if the idle adjust cable is too much you can't physically move the stop lever enough to shut the car down. Try popping out the cable from the lever and then try using the stop lever.
I would first check the vac line connectors on the ignition. Make sure they are a good tight fit. Sometimes those lines get oil in them then they just slip off. If that doesn't solve the problem, T your mity vac into the line the comes from the ignition to the shut-off valve on the IP. Then start the car. You should have 0 vac when the car is running, then it should jump up when you turn the car off. You may have vac leaks elsewhere in the car that doesn't allow enough vac to be supplied to the ignition system. Do you door locks work, transmission shift properly, or are your brakes hard? If you have any of these symptoms then you have vac leaks somewhere else.

Sorry 'bout that. It's an '81 300SD. The door locks all work as does the tranny and the brakes. I'm pretty sure the rest of the system holds vacuum.
When I try to apply vacuum to the IP line running back towards the ignition switch it doesn't hold or even come up so it's either the ignition switch or the line leading to it, right? I'm just trying to find the vacuum line to the ignition switch under the dash and haven't located it yet. OK, how to add a signature... r |

I have the same issue with the STOP button. I believe it is an issue with adjusting the linkage. I found that a bolt on the back of the IP was stopping me from pushing the STOP button far enough. Other Benz owners can push their button all the way to the valve cover. Search for Linkage measurements or distances. There was a post about those distances. Oh and the reason it doesnt stop is a vacuum leak. Search every connection. Took me about 2 days to figure mine out.

If you are unable to shutoff using lever that means you have a linkage problem.

Probably, but not always. On mine, pressing the stop lever would slow the engine way down, but not completely stop it. I even disconnected the linkage at the back of the IP and applied direct for to that lever in an attempt to stop it there - didn't work. Finally, I replaced that IP with w/ virgin ALDA I scored at a pick-n-pull. Same linkages, etc. Results - stop lever worked, and mpg jumped from 18-19 to a solid 25, and 0-60 up to a respectable 15 sec after an ALDA tweak.
