Transmission adjustment question

On my 91 300D 2.5 the cable that goes to the transmission doesn't adjust like most transmission cables I don't think. There is a linkage rod that runs across the valve cover that has a sloted part that allows the rod to change lenght by about 1 inch. Also there is another slotted place with a screw that allows adjustment. Do you still pull all the play out of the linkage as on other MBs and adjust the rod to line up with its connection point? Why is the 1 inch of movement made into the rod? When I got the car, the rod was adjusted so the slot was about in the middle of its movement. I like things that are solid and have a definate adjustment. Could someone please help me figure out how to make a definate adjustment on this rod?
Thanks
