So my wife wants a diesel

but she only drives 4 miles to work. We're wondering if that is too short a distance and may damage the engine. Does anyone else drive their's on such short runs?

With an occasional highway run to blow the cobs out I don't think you would have any trouble. Pretty strange, she could drive to work for 10 months on one fill up.

That's about what my wife does with the 240D, maybe 5 miles round trip. I try to get it out on the highway occasionally.

My wife would much rather prefer a stick. She doesn't want an auto if she can help it. So, she wants a stick, a diesel and helps me with auto repairs. How lucky is that?

Don't let her hear you say that, she'll whip your *ss. My wife is the only person in this world whom I'm afraid of and I spent 12 years in the military.

A bicycle would be my suggestion but I admit bias
For such a short distance I don't think a car makes sense

Buy her a NICE one, and I mean NICE. Something she will not only drive to work, but one that she will want to take out and open up on the highway.

Forget the gas models, forget the bicycles....get her a nice 240 OM617 and if she doesn't highway it every now and then, I guess it's just going to have to be your weekly duty....like walking the dog, only much more fun.

not to be a jerk, but...

240 = OM616 engine
300 = OM617 engine

ether car, 240D or 300D (300D Turbo, or 300SD) will be a great car for her... the OM61x engines are quite literately tractor engines, they will out last the chassis with proper oil changes. go for it man... wish is had a woman who wanted a diesel and helped with car repairs.
