Well if you want to do it right once in for all thats the ticket. I got lucky and my parts car had a tight steering box with a virgin adjustment screw. If not I would have bought the guts and did it myself.
Thats pretty much what the "adjustment" screw does, it moves the gears along a little, but it will only help to a point. After 250k-300k miles they are pretty done. I found taking the box apart similer to cleaning a sailboat winch. Just take your time, and keep everything very clean. The bolts on the front can be a PITA, I had to use an impact gun to free them. Everything else came apart with normal tools. The write up on the link is quite good, I followed it and wasn't surprised.

Are all the steering boxes on the W123 the same? like from 77 thru 85 gas and Diesel, or 240D vs 300D.
There was a 240D at PNP a while back with 133000 miles. almost grabed it but didn`t know if it would fit my 85 300D. like wise the w126 gassers and diesels, are they the same. and would the SDL/SEL be the same? right now there is a 83 SEL with 132000 miles at the PNP. low milage compared to most of the junk there. If it would fit the 84 the 300SD I might grab it. Charlie

One would think that they might all be the same for the W123 chassis as well as for the W126 chassis. But apparently they are not, maybe some improvements for the later models? When I inquired for rebuilt units as well as new, everybody asked for the VIN. For my '81 240D the p/n is 123 460 5801.
If I were to stumble onto an ultra low mileage parts car with a tight box I would feel like I won the lottery. |

well I answered my own question. did some searching in Fastlane.
Checked w123 from 1977 240D, 77 280E through 85 300D and all the same part number. M1050-106153 also checked W126 from 1981 300SD through 91 350SDL, also gassers. all have the same part number. M1050-106157 Charlie
