Any experienced 114/115 Vacuum pump rebuilders?

I would appreciate any advice or comments (photos if they exist) on rebuilding the vacuum pump on my 1976 300d 114/115.
Is it just all around easier to do the job with the radiator removed(and trany oil cooler removed as well, or is it just as easy to do the job without removing this? I found lots of diy photos tutorials on the 123 pump job but not on the older 114/115. ANy help would be appreciated. thanks
Rich

Your pump should be the same as the early 123 300D. Compare the diy diagrams with your car, procedure should be the same, I'd think. I've seen plenty of rebuild kits out there (when I rebuilt my 115 220D pump) that have all the instructions you need included. And I did not have to remove my radiator, although my engine was one cylinder shorter! Good luck, not a hard job IMO.

Those older style pumps are easy and inexpensive to rebuild but the main thing is NOT too over tighten the little diaphragm bolt and be sure too use the thread lock provided with the kit.

I have rebuilt our 116 vacuum pump. Removing the radiator and fan made the job much easier. Pretty straightforward job.

Nature abhors a vacuum pump

Thanks guys for the input. I really appreciate the advice and help.

I will probably remove the radiator since I have to flush and change coolant to the Zerex 05? yellow type. Other than this vacuum problem the car is working perfectly.
My next challenge will be to "soften" the shift between the starting out gear (second gear) and third.
Apparently this 114/115 always starts out as designed, in second gear. To get it to start out in first, one must depress the pedal all the way down to actuate the button switch on the floor. Very strange. I wonder why they chose this set up.

On a 77 300d I only had to remove the fan shroud. No need to remove the whole pump, just disconnect the two air lines and the front cover. Should take about an hour.

Vacuum pump rebuild on 76 300D

The job went without much difficulty.
Removing the fan blade and the radiator shroud was necessary.
Where I had 5 " Hg before, now I have 25"!
Big improvement.
