Oil Filter Washers

I've always wondered where the metal washers that come with the oil filter kit is/are used. Theres usually 3 washers - 2 smaller, same size and one larger. Of course everyone knows where the rubber o-ring goes, right?

One is for the plug and the other goes on the filter housing shaft, on top of the filter.

Suppose that a particular oil filter might fit a number of different engines? Maybe all engines don't have the same size drain plug? Reckon those extra seals might fit engines that you don't have?

Ummm, no.
nothing goes on top of the shaft. all seals are on the filter for the shaft.
the end of the shaft does need the two o-rings replaced occasionally, but no metal washers go on the shaft.
the correct response is above mine. the filter is used on other motors, and the metal washers are there to fit other drain plugs.

Huh, Well I've been putting that washer there ever since I've been into these cars because of some long forgotten reason. The little black parts book shows a washer but its probably one of the little rubber O rings.
Maybe I'd better change my habit's

Perhaps that washer is used at the bottom of the oil filter housing bolt on the older (pre 77) 617/6s

That extra washer is intended for some other vehicle that uses the same filters....the Hengst filters no longer include it. They only come with the copper drain plug washer and the rubber gasket now.

The OEM dealer filters come only with the rubber housing gasket, you have to ask them for the copper washer separately.

Of course, but if you argue they will generally give it for free. (I've gotten many washers and even some bolts/nuts free from them by complaining. ) So far by refusing to pay over quoted amounts, refusing to pay for something that they broke....and several other things....we've probably saved about $400-500 at the dealer so far.

Damn! the first time I changed my oil on the 1990, there was a copper washer on the stem, so I have always replaced it there. I noticed that it is never smashed or crushed even a little, though. I guess it won't hurt. Or at least it hasn't in the past 8 years.

There does not seem to be a rational reason for changing this, but I did anyway.

Does it matter which washer goes to which part? I mean does the copper washer go to the oil drain plug, or vice versa?

I use the copper one on the drain plug, so far, so good.
