Could a wide open wastegate cause this?

I agree with BC. It has to be some kind of restriction, like the turbo seized up. A waste gate stuck open would result in loss of power, but I don't think you would have the super fuel-rich condition you are describing because the ALDA would not be getting the boost signal. Physically check the turbo shaft/impeller by removing the U-tube and touching it (engine OFF of course).

Well the results are in, the turbo is toast, locked up solid. I can get a used one for about $250 but the indy wants $475 to install (including gaskets etc.) isn't this kind of high to swap a turbo?

..........yep..........we're good.........are we not?

$350 is a fair price to R & R the turbo with gaskets. But, it's a miserable job if the bolts are original and he probably has much easier work that he can do to occupy his time.

You can find a used turbo for $125. or less, if you're patient.

Guess what... When I took my wife back this morning to fetch her car MY TURBO WORKED!!! Maybe carbon buildup had it stuck and their monkeying around with it yesterday freed it up? I'm sure this is only temporary so I will keep looking for a cheap turbo. In the meantime I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks to all for the help.

That was a short lived event. Still bad turbo. Question: are the garrett and the KKK interchangable? When I buy the replacement will I need to match the turbo thats in the car or will either do?
