82 240d IP timing

Pulled my IP to replace it. Not sure about the pointer for the timing degrees on balancer. Not like other engines I've worked with (GM). Doesn't have a pointer that I can see.
Got someone to explain the bubble method for the IP timing.
Also, the IP drive gear on front has a scribe mark; is this used for timing??

HERE is the R&R guide for the injection pump.

Don't use the bubble method, it's inaccurate at best. Spend the $15 for the correct tool to do it right.

IP r & r

I really appreciate the r&r procedure that you provided me. That answered my ?'s. Only one thing, the pic for the marks on the harm. balancer is dark and I can't make out what reference point you align the 24 degrees BTDC. Unfortuately, its not like my GM's where the pointer is easily read.
Also, once I get everything aligned, the IP mounts are slotted for the purpose of turning either direction. Is this for even a more precise timing??
Hey thanks again.

Yes. Lining up the marks are a course setting to get it into the range you need. The slots allow for precise timing to be set.

I dont know where you get the idea that the bubble method is not accurate. Maybe your thinking of the "welling up" thing. The bubble method is much more streight forward, when the bubbles stop, your ON, no watching drips, no mess. You should try it sometime

You got me there, its not in the manual. I realize that when a method works for you its a pain to try some other way but next time you have the drip tube hooked up put a couple feet if clean hose on it and stick it in a container of water. then hook up another hose to the banjo on the back side of the IP (I have a banjo fitting and hose just for this purpose). Gently blow air through it while turning the engine. (I use the p/s bolt) When the bubbles stop your there. I'm not saying theres anything wrong with the drip method, just saying the bubble method is accurate even if its not in the FSM. Just try it when you have a chance.

Nah. I paid my $15 so I don't have to put my lips on anything when I time my engine.
