Say what?

Of course they come apart..........there are two of them under there. They have splines between them.

it's slowly sinking in that i must find out a way to secure the nuts on the rear of the front flex disc to remove them. i think there is only one place (because of the tranny mount) that one is able to put a box end up in there....

that means i'll have to move the car (whilst up on ramps a little forward , then check it, and undo that nut , then a little backwards, then check to see if i moved it enough....) if only i had a nice concrete pad and a floor jack to work with.......and that rear end would be right up in the air with the rear wheels able to move easily..

SHIESSE!!!!!!

In a previous post.........which you ignored...........I strongly urged you to lift the rear of the vehicle and block the body. If you had done this, and put the transmission in neutral..........you wouldn't be having these problems.

But, what do I know??

The driveshaft will rotate with only one wheel off the ground.

Good point.........might be harder to turn, however.........especially by hand.

Use a readily available torque multiplier.

In other words, rotate the elevated wheel.

Unhook the rear of the driveshaft from the diff.
put the car in nuetral.
turn driveshaft.

I suggest following Brians suggestion of jacking up the rear of the car and placing good jackstands under it then it will be level and safe. also easy to work on BOTH ends.

I will have more advice next week after I do the same job on my TD.

good luck-mo

no no, please don't think i ignored anything you said. problem is that i do not have a concrete pad to do the work on. all this was being done in a freakin gravel driveway, and you know how much of a PIA jackstands and lifts are when gravel comes into play. after all this, i will have to suck it up and admit defeat. i do not have anymore time today, and this was my free day. if i had a jack and a nice place to do the work that would probably have been my salvation, but instead i'll have to pay a visit to the local mb star shop (only about 1 mile away so at least that is good). nothing like admitting defeat...oh i could lie about it and said 'hell yeh fellas, job well done, and noone would have been the wiser', but just as a note to anyone doing this in the future...don't follow my procedure. i could have sworn that dieselgiant said nothing about the front flex disk...but that's my problem...

anyhoo...so far that's the only thing i've not been able to do, so i guess it's not that bad. hey, i got 2 mounts and 2 bearings from an ebay auction when i only ordered one, so that's good right??

night fellas...going for a nice cold one...after taking the gojo into the shower with me

If you are crawling beneath a vehicle that's supported on a gravel driveway.............there's not a single person on this forum that can help you. You've put your life in serious jeopardy to save the cost of a $200. part.

Good luck.

I suspect that, when you begin to "unhook" the rear flex plate, the value of a freely rotating driveshaft will become more apparent than it is currently.

In the process of replacing the differential unit I had to drop the drive shaft at the rear in order to access the forward two bolts on the dif case. Undid the centre slide assy bolts and the big nut in the shaft then the three bolts fastening the shaft to flex disk then used a pry bar to get that extra 1/8th inch to get the shaft over the alignment pin. Same drill to install. Three years and no flex disk problems.

I always kept a few scraps of 3/4 plywood around and some 2x12 bits when I lived w/ a gravel drive. use them under jack stands, etc.

it is not hard to be safe no matter where you need to do service. it may take a few more minutes, but is worth it. we cant all have fanciful concrete and garages...

from the first post in the thread...
"Got the three bolts out of the rear flex disk."

that would make unhooking the driveshaft very easy. all you need is to pry it forward, and ease it past the nub.

also, if you read my post you will note that I plan on having the entire car up.....

anyhow, good luck with whatever you end up doing.

I agree with "MOBETTA", I use some 3/4 plywood under my jack stands,
and I have asphalt to work on. they will sink into the asphalt with enough
weight on them over a period of time. can`t imagine doing it on dirt
w/o out some safety precaution. I even have a piece I roll my floor jack on.
