Tired of fixing my car. Time for new engine and trans.
I use my warn out 300d a lot. It is at the point where something goes wrong every month now. It wants to die.
At this point its costing me time i don't have and money to fix problems that could be ended with a new car or to go all out on this one. I really want a E300 diesel, but it wouldent go well with co-workers. I don't want a Honda, so I am fairly sure spending the big bucks on a new engine and trans is the way i want to go. Any ideas on where to find one? Has anyone taken their benz in to have it rebuilt? Im open to ideas Thanks

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a good used engine and transmission in your area. Rebuilt engines and transmissions are way too expensive. For what they cost you'd probably be able to buy an E300D but not a CDI of course.

What exactly is wrong with the engine and transmission that requires a rebuild? How many miles on them?
A good rebuilt engine is around $6K plus labor, maybe another $2-3K for a tranny. You can always install a junk engine, but what's the point? If you want a E300, buy one. |

I think the rear main seal went out on the tranny.
It leaks like SOB out of the back. I just replaced the B2 piston 2 months ago and the vac pump that i rebuilt 2-3 years ago is going out again. I don't have time to screw with project after project. I am expecting to pay around 8Kish for an engine trans with other stuff. I know its a lot but i see it as a good value still. 8K for another 300+K miles. I would prefer the E300 but don't want the office issues it could cause.

Which would be what? It's newer, more efficient, more comfortable, more reliable, and about the same size as a 300D. Would they be jealous of your 8+ year old car instead of your 22+ year old car?

If that's what you want to do, go for it. $8K sound like the right ball park.
I put a remanufactured tranny in mine at about 275K miles, and I will eventually either have the engine rebuilt or buy a remanufactured engine (hopefully not for at least another 100K miles). The difference is that I don't want a E300 (or a CDI), if I did I would have one. I quit worrying about "office issues" a couple of decades ago, it's a waste of time/energy. |

Yeah, I know it sounds stupid, but I work with Mormons. They are big on issues regarding class and other topics that would make it difficult for me to roll up in a car that anyone would say "look at him...".
For example the owner of the company drives a 1990 Nissan that looks like total crap and he is a millionaire several times over. Dont get me wrong. I love my 84 300D and would not mind driving it for another 20 years.

I'm just not sure you need that yet, how about bringing it to a good shop and having them go through it to find out what really needs to be done at this point? You may just need to take care of a bunch of little stuff for the next 100K miles or so. |

Heck Brabus, you could take it to Don Boland, and indy in Colleyville and he can get you fixed. He works on MB's only, and is in the forum listings for local MB mechanics.
I will go through several used engines before I would buy a new/rebuilt one, but I'm notoriously cheap I'm afraid. Out of necessity........ BTW, Don is very good, and he is HONEST!! It's an option anyway...

Have you considered a 90-93 300D 2.5? Pull the stars off it and no one at work will know what it is. More than a new engine, you need a new job. Or at least a new perspective. Walking on eggshells so you don't upset people at work is straining your subconscious. It's already affecting your basic judgment. Get out of that environment before you lose it![/psychology 101] Get the E300 you should be driving then put a bumper sticker that says "This car cost me less than a new Kia." Sixto 87 300D |

I have a mormon friend and he drives a new "S" series, and a plane ect. and has no problem with it. Maybe your boss a little to judgmental??? Oh by the way I have a sweet running motor/trans combo that I've pulled from a rusted 83 here in CT. Maybe that'll help.
