617 into W108?

I just picked up a 1968 280se and I'm having a hard time finding any information about putting an NA 617 motor in one. Does anyone know what would be involved?

It's been put into a W110. It will require modifications. Especially with the oil filter housing, oil cooler, accelerator linkage, and engine mounts.

put a 617... just move the oil filter housing with a custom bracket.. someone here has them/makes them

a diesel 108 would be sweet

but only if the current engine is dead

So other than the oil filter housing everything will just bolt up? Can I use the existing gas tank and lines? Can I use the existing transmission?

I was thinking more about the transmission in the w108. Would the motor mounts match up between an m130 and an om617?

I have no specific info. They might be close. The earlier 617 will be a better choice than the later since it is designed for a more similar engine compartment.

Best thing is to get a 115 body with the desired motor and sit them side by side and do a tale of the tapes, measuring as much as you can before starting with your wrenches and torch.

Been there...

I think you'll find the 108's axle ratio all wrong for the diesel. Unless you never plan on cruising above 55mph.
W108 rear ends are unique. Nothing else fits otherwise, my W108 would be 617 powered. Its GM powered now.

yikes!

I have an old Peterson Engine swapping book from about 1970. It has such a car with a 429 caddy plus hydromatic and steering column being swapped in.

It looked pretty sanitary when they were done.

I'm pleased with this conversion. Last long trip it easily got over 20mpg.
I've had it to 135mph and still pulling. The engine is a GM crate motor with a cam upgrade, aluminum intake and holly 600cfm carb. It idles well with a slight hint of "cam". Torque RPM range is pretty wide and smooth.
The original six differential failed during a "standing on the throttle second gear shift". I replaced it with one from a 4.5 W108.
The car handles very well however, recently I've found the subframe bushings worn.
Its currently undergoing an engine bay cleanup (rerouting some wires and hoses), new AC system. There's a ton of room to work.
Subframe bushings soon.

I sill wish it was a diesel though... Love to swap it for a nice TD. I've got more things than A$$ to haul these days.

Front or rear? My 115 must need bushings; it gets a little hairy during hard braking...
