190D fan clutch issues
Hi, I have an 84' 190D and plan to replace the fan clutch today. The fan shroud is out, the bolt from the center of the fan is out, and the drive belt's off.
Is there like a secret way to get the get the magnetic fan clutch out? I can't even remove the engine fan blade and it looked like that bolt was the only thing holding it to the pulley that's connected to the water pump. |

Not many 190D's on here. That is the only MB model I know of with a magnetic fan clutch.

My 230CE has one. I've never messed with it.

fan clutch
I'm trying to get mine off too! I need to replace the water pump. The book says after you unbolt the bracket "just slide off the coupling body" (fan clutch) Right!! I tried a couple of pry bars to the point I thought I might break it. Maybe a wheel puller? Let me know if you figure it out. My pump should arrive in a couple of days. I'll try again then.
I've got an 84 190e. Mike |

190 Stuff...
I've never had a reason to replace a fan clutch in any of mine, but if you are a 190 owner, you might want to check the forums at www.190revolution.net.
It's mostly kids (under 30) there, but you should be able to find your answer. SteveM.

Got mine off and it was fairly easy. You have to find all the bolts that hold the bracket on. Then I took two small pry bars, one on either side of the back of the clutch, and pry the clutch forward from the water pump. Mine was a tight fit. The new one should slide right back on.

On the 190, the radiator header (or whatever the sheet-metal part that runs from fender-to-fender across the top of the radiator/condensor is called) is bolted in, about a 5minute job to remove, then the radiator and condensor tip forward and give you lots of room.
I replaced the clutch in my '87 190DT, but that was a viscous-clutch, fairly easy with normal hand-tools.
