Rough Idle, Smoke, Nailing
Car starts immediately after the glow plug light goes off. Purrs like kitten for about 10 to 15 seconds and then starts to cough, rattle, nail and sputter with a lot of smoke. As soon as I drive a short distance the idle is perfect again but nailing persists. Nailing gets less after engine is fully warmed up but is still loud. Car drives like a dream, great acceleration and there is no nailing above 1200 rpm. There is no rough idle when the engine is somewhat warm, even after it was parked for hours. Injector nozzles were replaced and the delivery valve seals have been replaced due to a leak but that did not make any difference. Not sure what to look at next.

Took another look at the delivery valves last night and when I took the valves out all 5 cavities below the valves were empty. (when I did this before they stayed filled with diesel) That means the fuel had drained back into the pump and that also explains the starting issue. Starts up fine with the fuel still being in the line between the valve and the injectors and when that is used the rough idle and nailing starts until the pump somewhat catches up. Also explains the nailing due to air getting into the system, or am I wrong here? Does that sound like an air leak and if so what would be a good way to troubleshoot that.
