Quick brake pedal feel question

What exactly is normal on these 82 300Ds? How firm is too firm? Should the car stop with just a light touch of the pedal? I dunno if im making any sense but I have no frame of reference. Right now my pedal is nice and firm when the car is operating and if the car is slowing down it will stop with minimal effort but if im still travelling at speed it requires more effort.

Its never "Rock hard" or "to the floor". I guess driving newer cars I have a hard time knowing whats considered "Normal braking" on these older ones. Maybe im just being an idiot. Thanks for humoring me if you have any info.

it should be firm but linear. Not soft like a way boosted pickup truck system, which needs to be made to be tapped and enlarged, not firm but shot travel like some other cars, it should stop quite well with a little pressure and little travel on the pedal. At the same time it is linear in stopping fore and thus deceleration at speed.

Sounds like youre fine.

I agree, it sounds normal. These cars require more effort than most newer cars (and have more feel).

Yeah it is better that way, especially without ABS. I hate driving cars with overboosted brakes, just touch them at high speeds and oops! ABS engaged, or if you don't have it, squeeling tires.

The S-classes I have driven have a lighter pedal feel though.

as long as it's stopping well, and quickly, you are fine. the 4 wheel discs on these cars have amazing stopping power! you should have NO issues with stopping as quickly as you want, if you are having problems slowing down, something is wrong. that said, at HIGH speed, say 80, slowing down to a quick stop, will require a lot of pressure from your foot. but it should stop well and quick.

I have a thread on high brake pedal pressure on my 77 300d. Conclusion reached was that the pad backings were hitting the spring that holds them in place, stopping full pressure from being applied to the rotor. New front pads solved the problem. Others have experienced the same thing.
So, it's possible yours is normal, or you might be having a similar problem. I became aware that mine was a problem when I switched from driving the 85 TD to the 77 300d and noticed the pedal pressure difference.
