Wheel bearings

What is the proper procedure for installing new front wheel bearings on my 1985 126 300sd. Can not seem to get the proper torque on the split nut.

What method are you using to determine "proper torque?"

I spin the rotor until it starts to be difficult to turn then back off 1/3 of a turn.

After backing the nut off, smack the end of the spindle straight-on with a hammer. That will "unload" the bearings.

Did as you guys suggested but I'm getting a slight wheel vibration at highway speeds that I never have gotten before. It seem like the wheel is wobbling, just got new tires with a high speed balence.

I've had a similar feeling from a bad tie rod, take a look at your front end components.

Craig - I would be interested in what you suggest as to checking the inner tie rods. Have *something* up on the 99.

Did you replace both the cones and outer races?

You might try jacking the front end, then grap the tire(s) at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and check for movement.

The new tires could be entirely responsible for the vibration. You might also try swapping tire positions and see if the problem moves with the tire.

That's too loose. Tighten the nut then back off until the washer can be turned with minimal effort.

Could you post a picture of this washer?

Well, you don't have washer. The factory spec. is .0004"-.0008" endplay as measured with a dial indicator.

I wonder really how many of us check end play using a dial indicator. I wonder what the Haynes manual specifies for this since they tend to simplify many adjustments.

I never use a dial indicator. But I'm not going to advise anyone to adjust a wheel bearing in other than a factory manner.

You got that right. Take it to a trusted professional if you're unsure.

I imagine that the brake rotor would keep the wheel from entirely separating from the car in the event of a failure, but I sure don't want to find out.
