It should be fine in a pinch and for training purposes, just don't make it a habit...

I usually loosen the bolts on the oil filter and raise the cap enough to break the seal (1/8" or so) and then remove the drain plug. I have a snack and by the time I get back, things are drained well.
If I use a dip stick tube extractor (which I do most of the time now) I let the filter drain for about 10 minutes before I use the extractor.

You're just removing a cap, you'll see the big "o" ring, that comes with the filter as does the copper crush washer for the drain bolt. Near the bottom of the "shaft", you may see two small "o" rings, replace those too. I hear the India filters are fine.

Just to clarify, you don't have to replace the small o-rings on the bottom of the shaft every time you change the oil, just replace them if/when they are old and dried out. I replaced mine about 100K miles ago and they are still doing fine. It's unlikely the the previous owner replaced them.

Well, that was the easiest oil I have ever changed! I am never taking it to the shop for that again! I used the Delo 400, Chevron. Thanks to all of you who gave me the pointers. The more I work on this car, the more I love it!
