its been said before but i cant find it

what do i use to clean out my intakefrom all the EGR crap? ie. soot , oil etc..

dont i soak it totally in something and it all bubbles away?

Soaking the manifold in commercial parts cleaning solvent or biodiesel works well.

I read a while back about someone taking it to a self-serve car wash.

I dont think a pressure washer will get the crud out.. maybe chunks of it but soaking it in a solvent will work alot better than water

Gasoline worked fine for me.

The cheapest safe parts washer solution I know of is concentrated Gunk ... which is available in a one gallon can.... to be mixed with several gallons of kerosene. Out here on the farm I spray a lot of equipment.... keep it capped because it is designed to be washed off with water...
Gasoline is NOT SAFE to use...

engine cleaner/degreaser works pretty well. My only experiences are with gas engines, but I imagine it would be the smae. The only problem is the stuff can get pretty priidy if you byu it by the gallon. The napa near me has it in bulk but it is also a distribution center, so not sure on availability either.

A year or so ago I read a Member sprayed I believe it was foaming Oven Cleaner inside and washed it out with a hose later. I bet follow up with a pressure washer would be better than the hose. Any way do a search with Oven Cleaner if you are interested.

I have been planning this same project for weeks and keep putting it off. I tried everything on my past 2 Passat TDI's. Nothing would cut it except the oven cleaner followed by a pressure washer. And it was still a pain. I'm hoping the MB is not as coked up.

I would try B99 if you have access to it. Soak it overnight and I bet the crap comes right off.

I have heard that heat works. But never tried it.

I have not done the MB yet. It looks lke a little bit of a pain in the arse compared to the TDI because both the manifolds are on the same side.

I guess you have to see how bad it is. Most use a combo of strategies including soaking, oven cleaner, pressure washer, mechanical, etc.

It can be a nasty job, though the Benzes I've seen don't seem to be as bad as others.

Mine is soaking in a bucket of diesel fuel as I write this. After it soaks for a few days I'm going to use an old bottle brush - the gunk is melting away.

I soaked one of my TDI manifolds in diesel for a day. I might as well have put it in soap and water. It did not do anything. Even with wire brushes it was impossible to clean.

If the crud is not "too hard" it may come off. But if it is what I have seen before.... Forget it.

It takes some serious solvents and ingenuity to get that stuff out of there.
