I got fuel in my 82 300sd the other day. Unfortunately, the pump's automatic shut off didn't work. As I stood there, diesel started running around my feet from under the car. I moved the car and looked under and noticed a hose that, at first, I though had pulled off from somewhere. Then as I looked at it, it looked like it was supposed to be that way.

Am I right to assume that the fuel tank overflow at the fuel cap goes down through the car and spills out at the axle?

Well that was easy. It's one of those things that can be disconcerting if you don't know about it. I thought my tank had sprung a leak.
