How would I know.... 617

..... if the timing is off on a 617?
...... if the timing chain is loose?

Off would be a no run or engine damage condition. Loose, you might hear it slap, or poor running, bending valves, etc.

None of the above 84D - runs/idles very well... just a little engine shudder and low power that am trying to diagnose... Slight coincidence with using B20. Only filled 2x. I remember pawosd saying experienced power loss and low mileage with bio-d. Symptoms started just b4 bio-d but worsened during bio-d. Am now back to straight diesel with a bit of bio-d still in tank.

But 84D noticeably slower on take off.. been recently reading to chk throttle linkage.... 85D feels like a rocket compared to 84D.... any suggestions...

Change your filters, and check your tank strainer. What does the clear prefilter look like? BD has the tendancy to loosen up all the crud and crap that has been building up in your tank for the past 20 somthing years.

I did change spin-on filter after first bd tank...clear filter looks ok, very slight discolor, I've seen worse. No noticeable diff after filter change.

Also cleaned alda line and banjos. I was thinking strainer, too but trying to rule out simple stuff first. Never had the opportunity to work on strainer - yet. Seems messy and a lot of work....

Looks can be deceiving on the primary filter. I have a Stanadyne fuel water separator installed also. I find dino crud in the fuel bowl in the stanadyne every time I run bio, and the primary would look "ok".

Have you replaced the chain on this car yet? If not, have you checked the chain stretch and/ot IP timing recently. At 245K miles, I would check.

A 617 can run quite well when the timing is off.

Oops! I was thinking along the lines of the timing chain being off, like no longer around the cam sprocket.

I found the problem... sometime back I was playing with the idle and in the process I also turned the throttle stop screw/bolt out not knowing what it was......

I must have moved it out almost 1/4 inch. I put it back to its previous position and am back in business.....
