How do they balance it? If you break a revolution into 6 parts you get ign-ign-ign-exh-exh-exh in sequence. Seems like you'd need an engine with factors of 3 rows of triangles, or massive crank dampers.

That explains the multiples of three in the various sized engines. I think the articles says 3, 9 or 18 banks.

I didn't notice it was a gasser. That's doing a lot of needless work on top of doing a lot of hard work

Since it's a 2 stroke you can attach an M103 type distributor to the crank. A plug fires on each 3 consequtive 60* points, nothing for the remaining 3 60* points, lather, rinse, repeat. I can't tell how he did it, though.

What is the compression ratio on that thing? It must have been massive to produce the power to weight ratio, no wonder it was "high strung".

Thats nothing. Look up the Napier Nomad. It is true dieselhead pr0n. I guess you might call it a transvestite diesel pr0n because its half turbine. The first version had an after burner "Additional short-term power to improve take off (TO) could be implemented by the option of passing the diesel exhaust gas through two fuel-injected combustion chambers (essentially, afterburning of the diesel exhaust) and through another turbine in series on the same compressor/turbine shaft."

Damn. That Evelyn Woodhead speed reading course has done nothing for my comprehension.

But how do you transfer the kenetic energy to whatever load you want to move ? with thrree crankshafts, you'd have to have like some sort of chain driven torque drive right? *noob*

The three crankshafts are geared to a single output shaft.
