350 SDL rattle

I'm stumped. My 350 has a rattle at the front of the engine. As near as I can tell, its near injection pump. Still there with fan belt off. It is only at idle and loudest when car is first started. I switched IP with one I pulled at junk yard. Car runs better but rattle still there. The only thing I can think is something lose in cent. timing advance. One of you old MB heads, I need your input. Thanks.

New style or old style vacuum pump? If old style, check that there are 6 balls in the bearing and that the plastic spacer thingy is in place providing adequate spacing for the balls.

What does the crank pulley position when the cam is at #1 TDC?

I put a new timimg chain in about 10k ago. tdc is on mark. Don't know if the vaccum pump is old style or new, any way to tell from exterior view?

New style has 4 screw heads sticking out of the front cover. Old style has a smooth front cover. Folks have found old style bearing on pumps with new style cover so I'd pull the vacuum pump to give the cam and lever mechanism a proper inspection. Or maybe you'll find another cause such as a lazy chain tensioner first.

There are pics of the new style vacuum pump in the FastLane and Buy Parts links above.

I've seen the tensioner damper fail, making the belt and tensioner jump, making noises..

Took the belt off, so it's not belt damper. I have a chain tensioner in my pile of junk yard parts. I will try that. The VP has new style cover but I will check that if the chain tensioner doesn't solve the problem. Thanks for the input, Al
