I hear the head used on the 3.5L engine is a good casting.

Yea, a head from a 90- 95 6 cyl 3.5 would be great too, they are all compatible.
There has to be somebody that can find these, there are none on car-part.com, and I have no leads on Mercedes dismantlers, any help would be appreciated. |

The #17 head IS the 3.5 head.
Go for a #22 head. Sixto 87 300D |

Where do I find a #22? what do they come on?
Why wouldn't I want to use the 17? If i understand correctly, they both solve the problem no? |

Anything above #17 wasn't original equipment on a US car. As time went on, MB offered improvements. AFAIK, #20 and #22 improve the oil passage layout between #1 and the timing chain cavity which reduces the chance of head gasket leaks in this area.
There is no functional difference between #17, #20 and #22, and I suspect it goes for the castings in between. I was offering alternatives to help your budget and time constraints. With any head other than #14 you will have to rework the #14 prechambers per gsxr's spec, or use the prechambers AND injectors of the later head. Sixto 87 300D |

OM603 - big compression leak at injectors/prechambers
That was enough info for a machine shop to trim my #14 prechambers for a #22 head. Sixto 87 300D |

You can always buy one new for about $1600. I just got one used (10,000) for $750, so they are out there, they just don't come up for sale very frequently.

Hell at this point I'd almost buy a complete motor to get one complete with injectors etc.. sounds like a bolt on part if it's complete with injectors etc....

indeed they are rare. The problem with the new ones is they are bare. nothing on them, no valves no nothing.
try car-part.com . but be wary. Even the ones marked as good may not be. I bought one from Potomac-German guaranteed to be rebuildable and my machine shop spent about 2 minutes to determine it was warped bad enough that he couldn't keep it in spec on the shave. The next one I got was a #22 and it was complete for $1200. Included PC's, injectors, lifters and cam. Most was trashed though and I ended up using my injectors, valves and prechambers.

When I'm shopping around for heads (I do this alot for vw diesels) tell your vendor that you aren't buying anything that hasn't been tested for straightness with a machine shop straightedge and a feeler gauge (any good mechanic operation has this on hand). Anybody who sells heads knows what you're looking for too so I don't think they can play dumb.
If it's not warped or cracked, Is it safe to assume it's bolt on a go situation with a 3.6 head on a 3.0? Of course anytime I have a cyl head off anything that's not on a race car (pulling for inspection only) I send it away to be pressure checked and have a valve job and valve seals.. it's almost crazy not to do so. I'd also replace all the lifters as at a late stage in the game those are pretty well huffed.. |

yes, 3.5 and 3.0 heads are generally interchangeable but see above for issues about prechambers and injectors which changed later in production
