A while back, I read on this forum about a similar problem and it turned out to be the IP linkage was adjusted incorrectly. This caused the IP to run on the edge of cut-off and always needed revving to keep it running. He talked about disconnecting the linkage above and feeling for the detent.

That's definitely worth checking, although any indy who missed that should never be allowed near anything with a tri-star again.
If you do need a new injection pump, check the junkyards/ebay. If you have a junkyard in your area that allows you to remove your own parts, I bet you can get an injection pump for less than $50. You also could try posting that you want the part in "Parts" section of the forum. There must be forum members w/ a spare injection pump who would part with it for less than $200. If you're physically able, you really should consider doing your own work. Labor costs make these cars uneconomical for many of us. The injection pump on an 83 can be swapped without removing the oil filter housing, and there is plenty of support here to talk you through the job.

Despair is lifting
Thanks for the linkage info. I'll look it up.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, too. I AM physically able and mechanically inclined. Depending on my results from the linkage search, y'all might be looking forward to a series of "Help me replace my IP" questions. Please keep up the encouragement and ideas.

Quote:
A non-spring related cause could be grit or caustics in the WVO causing the piston to leak more fuel past it as it compresses it. And that would affect the idle because the pump wouldn't be able to generate sufficient injection pressures at lower RPM.

I priced IP Friday at $350 used on a salvage yard internet search. As a side note, when I broke down a guy said a pusher pump would help a weak pump do the job. May be an option to consider while waiting for a replacement IP. In my case, praise God, I was able to get up and running again with new filters.

Plans, need help
OK. At this point I'm planning to bring the car home and work on it myself. The best price I've seen for IPs seems to be on ebay - Buy it now with shipping around $250. Does anyone have any experience/lessons there?
I've got the digital manual, but can't find any details how to remove/install the IP. Does anyone have any links to share that would give me a step-by-step on replacing an IP?

Seems like your next move would be a wrecking yard IP.

Here are a couple of links for reading:

Thanks for the help and the links! After I get the car back home and get into it, I'm gonna need a lot more advice. Encouragement, if nothing else!
