that was last march I posted that. my by pass hose hasn`t leaked since then.

I think there is a spot in the balancer that is cut out. line it up with that
one bolt, and you should be good to go w/o removing the balancer. this in on the 617.

I`ll have to double check myself tomarrow on my extra engine. but it seems that is what I did.

Please note that "water pump" and "water pump housing" are not synonymous.

That considered, removing the housing on a 617 engine would require the removal of the crankshaft pulley and vibration damper, but not the balancing disc.

Okay, that's where I was confused. So I assume the water pump can come out without removing the housing then.

Thats exactly what I needed to know, thank you. That hose is leaking on my 300D and none of the parts zoos knew what size was needed.

Does anyone know if a local parts chain (napa, autozoo, checker, etc) stocks the thermostat housing gasket? I just can't bring myself to pay $8 shipping for a $1 gasket.

I picked up the t-stat housing gasket for about $1.50 from CarQuest. The part is in the Worldpac system, so pretty much any NAPA or CarQuest should be able to get you one out of the warehouse quickly, i.e. same day, or next day.

The part number on my receipt says the part number is 6162030280 (Same as the MB part #) and the part is made by Victor Reinz.

Also, the hose I used for the bypass was a Goodyear product. part number is 56026. 1 5/8 ID. It works perfectly.

My indy said to press the t-stat into a piece of cardboard from a cereal box and cut the gasket out of that.

I didn't listen to him and ordered one (and some other stuff) and mine still leaked. I think I just need to take more time to clean up the area before installing it...it was cold at the time...still waiting for it to warm up to fix it right.

The cereal box cardboard sounded a little crazy, but when I got the gasket, it didn't feel too much different than cardboard.

Also an effective solution. Back when I was poor... Okay, poor-er ... I made plenty of gaskets from cereal boxes. In fact, I actually found reason to make a carb gasket not so long ago for an old Briggs & Stratton engine built in 1962 - The gasket was no longer available, so I was forced to roll my own.

I remember being on a road trip as a kid and seeing my dad buy a small carton of milk for the waxed paper so he could replace the thermostat gasket after puling a stuck thermostat.

To prevent leaking, I tend to scrape mine down to bare metal as well as I can, and then use Aviation gasket cement or High Tack gasket cement on the gasket going on.
Yes, the adhesive makes it more work to remove the gasket next time I do the job, but I have had no problems with leakage around a gasket that I've used the cement on.

When I installed the new engine, I used Permatex form a gasket sealant part 2B or 2A, don`t remember which, I have both.
I did not want any leaks from any where. I know it is said many times to place the gaskets of these MB engines dry for what ever reason.

In post#9 above I mentioned I was having a leak in the by-pass hose, and tightening it didn`t seem to help. even repositioned the clamps etc...
This is with a new MB hose. I guess it finally stopped leaking from some of the dried coolant around the edge. wasn`t a big leak, just seeped and ran down to make a mess, and would be wet first thing in the morning, and would stop after the eng. warmed up.

Mt indy (Henry) said I could remove it, clean it up and apply a thin layer of Permatex sealant between the hose and the pipe.

AS a side note: I have the engine out because the rear main is leaking and making a mess. hauled the eng. to him in the back of the PU so he could see what was actualy leaking. I had a leak in the front making a small mess from the vacuum pump. there are 3 screws that screw into the oil galleries and it was leaking around the threads. he said to clean up the bolts and use the Permatex on the threads will fix that.
Second reason eng. is out. >4 SPEED INSTALL< YEAH!!!!

Ok, back on topic.

Hey that's a different part number that I gave you last (pn#24226). Is it still $1.40 an inch?

It is a different part number, and a slightly smaller hose. 41mm.

Cost was similar... $1.03 per inch, but YMMV. Like a goober, I picked up the entire 7" section they had left on Saturday afternoon, forgot it at home when I went to install it, and purchased another 6" of it the following Monday. I now have a lifetime supply of the stuff, but might go ahead and upgrade it to a silicone version when I go over the motor this summer.
