I had to swap out a sump case on a 617 engine. That alone would deter a crankshaft swap, never mind that MB bottom ends are notorious for longevity and being bomb-proof. I wouldn't disassemble one of these engines unless it was absolutely demanded.

My tech is skeptical about doing anything non-stock. He is warming up to the 4-sp. If I told him I wanted to swap out the crank, he'd fire me as a customer!

Wouldn't be a bad job if you had the engine on a stand.

well my thinking is you could renew the seals and such while you were down there, throw some new bearings in it, new oil pump.

Sure, at least new seals and bearings. Dont think I would like to "grind" down the OD of the bearing.

now if you were putting an older crank in this engine you would be solving this problem, we are speaking of the pilot bearing are we not?

I would just call a bearing supply house with the O.D. (34 mm?) and I.D. (no idea) that you need. They should be able to set you up.

Yep.. Theres also a little cup shaped "keeper" with a hole in the middle (for the tranny shaft) that fits in the hole after the bearing is installed that would have too be dealt with after the bearing was "ground" down.
