%*&^%(* Ac Again!!!!

This is just crazy man!

Anyway, car blew the #8 fuse on the way to work this morning. I changed it at lunch and atthe end of the day, when it it over 100, it blew again. I know this fuse runs the blower motor and the a/c compressor. I am out of fuses now, so I founfd a 15 amp blade fuse and held it in with pliers. As the fan speed increased, the fuse got hot and blew.

I found the blower resistors very loose, so I tightend them up and just for grins ran another grounding wire. I tried another blade fuse, this time with the blower motor disconnected. Fuse held for 10 min. I removed the fuse, then connected the blower motor. Did the fuse trick again, it blew right after I made the connection.

SoI pulled the blower motor, and I found it is difficult to spin and the armature is a blue color from over heating.

What do you guys suggest? buy a new motor of try to repair this one?

If the bearings on the motor are shot (I assume so, since it won't spin freely), I'd say you need to replace it.

I just ran an unloaded amp test (no squirrel cage) and it pulled 3 amps. Put the cage back on and back in the dash, it pulls 21.36 amps on economy. The balance pulled 5 amps on A/C mode.

Yep time to replace, I think.

Thanks!

Ain't it FUN in this 100 degree heat?

Any one know how many amps a blower motor, in good shape pulls on average?

Since mine was pulling so many, I think I know why the PO put in a 30 amp. Of course this has caused discoloration and some melted plastic in the fuse holder...

Mine just "died" too last week. No blower motor, no AC, heat, nothing.

Will try a fuse and PRAY!!!!

If not, uh-oh!!!

I took one of my blower fans apart and cleaned up the bushing and the armature. It has held for over a year. It was very tight and icky, so I reamed the bushings actually with a gun cleaning brush, then polished with scotch-brite. Same with shaft. Lubed with some Zoom Spout oil. Still going.
I believe there was a modification to install a 30 amp fuse in some kind of fuse holder, but I don't have the info, just remember reading it.
Ralph, it's just too hot to be having AC problems......
At least the "system" is working well!

**it's too bad. I have a brand new MB blower fan of some kind, but I don't know what type of car it goes into. Certainly not a W123....**

I replaced mine with an aftermarket blower brand new off ebay for $135 three years ago. Works flawlessly. My original one melted itself, made horrifying sounds, and finally one day a poof of smoke came out of the vents that smelled like burning electrical components... so I turned the clima OFF instantly, removed the blower, and found that it melted the housing and the motor was so stiff it'd barely turn. Brushes were 100% gone....bearings were loose and shot, you could wiggle the shaft back and forth etc...

Our '83 had its die from bad brushes but the motor is still good....my dad wants to repair it sometime. We put in a used one we got from a forum member that had at least 60% of the brushes left and spun free and perfect....works great.

I guess A/C problems are like overheat issues. Always happens at the worst time. Does Murphy ever take a vacation?

Jimmy is right, at least "the rest of the system works". That is so encouraging. Thanks man!

I installed the new motor yesterday, and it does blow harder that the other motor did. It did not pop the fuse, but the fuse did get really hot and some more fuse holder plastic melted. Time to do the shunt now...

Jimmy, I got it at ******** Arizona, online. Free shipping. I bought 10 of each fuse also, so my total was $95. The red and blue fuses were $0.08 each and the white was $0.13 each. All are ceramic, not plastic.

Best of all, NO TAX!!!!

How is China running now?
