Thumbs up SDL driveshaft + rear diff problems!

Welp, I had an axle boot take a crap on me so it's time to go through the rear (not in that manner pervs ). Anyway, I'm going to rebuild both of my axles, replace all diff mounts, probably the subframe mounts, etc.

Now I have a few issues:

I will be doing flex discs here too, does the SDL have a boot for the center bearing? It comes up in the catalogs but I don't want to buy and have to return something.

I have an arbor press now too, I will need this to R&R the bearing correct?

Main sub mounts, should I pull the springs out?

Anything else you guys recommend?

Tough questions. The only thing I'm sure of is you don't have to compress or remove the springs to replace the subframe mounts. You will if you replace the trailing arm bushings.

The axles come out without touching the diff.

I think that's a typo. Actually, you have to do quite a bit with the diff - drain it, remove the cover, remove the circlips that hold the axles inside, unbolt the diff mount, and alternately lower and raise the sucker to get the right angle to R/R the axle. Pretty easy job though, and worth doing.

No typo, just a wrong answer. Been too long without a 126. On the 124 and 140 the axle shafts are bolted to stub axles. No need to open the diff to release the axle shafts. Sorry, Hit Man.

You're incorrect.

'85 and down you have to remove the cover. '86+ you do not have to do this.

Just had the driveshaft out and back in on the '86. It does have a center support for the bearing, and it's usually shot by now.

Yes, you'll have to press the bearing off and press the new one into place. I'm sure you know to match mark the drive shaft halves before separating them.

If you have the spring removal tool, I'd definitely remove the springs. Getting those bolts to start with the spring load fighting you, and risking a cross thread..........is simply not worth it. You can remove the springs in just over one hour if you're quick.

Did you get any further info on the vibration at speed with increasing torque load? The new driveshaft is not doing the job............it gives a noticeable hum at any speed above 70 mph when the pedal is pressed. The more torque..........the more the vibration. I'm more than a little peeved...........

I assume the new shaft had not only the bearing, but the support replaced also?

Any guarantee on your new shaft?

The new shaft comes with a new support. Presumably, they balance it with the support.

Hopefully, but, I don't have a high degree of confidence that their procedures are what they claim.

Odd, I wonder if others have this issue with the SDL.
