Mine does the same way too. The gauge needle would rapidly bounce after a good highway run, but mine started doing it last week. I don't know and I'm not sure but I think, it is temperature related. Ambient temp here was 3 digits last week and I don't have these kind of needle bouncing before the ambient temp went to the hundreds, and it doesn't bounce at night when the temp is around 80's -90's. BTW, I just had an oil change two weeks ago and I'm positive that the oil filter shaft o-ring are still good. One way to check is try to hose off the oil cooler radiator while at idle and see if the bouncing stops.

Mine bounces sometimes too.
Mine sometime does the needle bounce. Usually it is after a stretch of highway driving. It goes rapidly from 2 to just above 1 and back again.
Normally it idles with a warm engine around 2 or just over 2 bar. Now this is on a W126 so it has the electric oil gauge. Any ideas on why mine is doing it? As long as the needle never drops below 1, I am not worried, but it is annoying!

W124 does it too!
My '87 does that, too, at idle with a warm engine. I assumed that it was a failing or dirty electrical sender for the electrical oil pressure gauge. The sender is fairly expensive so I was holding off. I haven't checked the two little oil filter o-rings and need to -- on the '85 they had turned to hard plastic.

Jeremy did the '85 O-rings cause the needle bounce?
I didn't realize it happens to a lot of you guys, and with a multitude of answers this might take some time for me to track down... Chedeng has a good point I also thought about the ambient temps. When we went to the desert it was so hot and that's probably where the needle started bouncing. It never stopped. I was out of the country for two months June to August and when I came back the needle still bounced after a good highway drive. Even in the city it does bounce.

I wouldn't call mine 'bounce'. I'd call it vibration since it oscillates so fast. In fact, it makes a buzzing noise when it occurs.

The oil pressure gauge on my 85TD with 257K does the same thing. It buzzes very audibly when moving from/to the 2 and 3 bar marks on longer trips in hot weather. My passengers were getting rather annoyed by the sound. Cooler weather and short trips aren't a probem. I am interested in finding out the TSB and part number to fix it.

Needle bounce
My needle is always 3 bar on highway, 2 bar city/idling drops regularly to 1 1/2 bar back to 2 when hot. Figure sending unit or wiring problem, no biggie to me.
Although I have seen a 350 chevy van oil pres guage rapidly vibrate after a main bearing spun, a month after I sold it (to a firend). |

That's normal. Nothing wrong with it.

Mine doesn't have a clicking sound while the needle bounces/vibrates except when it hits the stopper/dowel at 3 BAR, then it make this sound everytime I rev from idle.

I'll wait for the TSB, I hope it's nothing serious. Mine doesn't make any clicking sound it's just visually annoying.

Well, I went through the TSB book, but it wasn't there. There is one more place it might be, and that is in the Frank King columns in old Star Magazines. I will dig through them tomorrow.

Found it!!
From January / February 1994 Star Magazine, Technical Tips by Frank King:
"Oil Pressure Gauge" "A rather common complaint of owners of cars with oil pressure gauges that are actuated directly by the oil through a tube (not by an electrical sensor) is that the gauge needle vibrates both visibly and audibly. This occurs most frequently when oil pressure drops below 3 bar, as when idling with the engine hot. This condition may be relieved by installing a restrictor, part number 123 542 00 74, in the oil line just before the gauge. By decreasing the diameter of the oil column, it damps the vibrations."
