Do W123 coupes have torsion bars?

This guy says "the car runs very well, however it has a broken torsion bar now, which is about an 800.00 repair at a shop."

I have never worked on a 123, but I thought they had coil springs.

He may be talking about the sway bar or guide rods on the front.

More info is needed.

No torsion bars on mine. It has the same suspension as a sedan.

I think mercedes favored spring suspension, due to its ability to absorb shock so much better. a smoother ride overall, where as torsion bar is attached directly to the frame, or body. more vibration felt throughout the entire car.

Go with Ara T. MB calls 'em a torsion bar, really an anti-sway bar. Seems to be odd for that to break. You'll need to check the other components connected to it. The upper control arm(s) anyway. Looks like a PITA to replace.

The Sway bars do break on occasion.

It is rare but the cars are over twenty years old.

Rust sure doesn't help... I can't remember who it was, but someone had to fix their broken sway bar and it was a huge pain in the ass. Then you look at a domestic car and the sway bar is on the bottom and takes 5 minutes to remove...

We replaced it on our '83 after rust broke off the tip on the passenger side. It was quite a project.

torsion bar saver

why change out the whole Torsion bar? look in the tools
section, there is a part called "Torsion bar saver" for the
W-123 / 126. just replace the ends of the bar with new ends
welded on. I think they are stainless steel. read that some
place.
part# QP 1000 $127.50

You can get a new MB rear sway bar for $100 or so. Any junk yard will carge you no more than $50. Rear replacement is easy, front is harder.

yah, the sway bar usually breaks on the end where it attaches to the wheel suspension. never heard of one breaking in the midsection.....

I'd be wary of welding a suspension component. the sway bars are hardened, welding will take away the hardening, opening you up to a fatigue failure.......

I doubt the sway bars are hardened. There's no reason to do so. I have repaired a broken sway bar end by welding on a bolt. The repair was quick, much quicker than replacing the sway bar. It's still going, over 10 years later.

Is the car really undrivable w/out a front sway bar? I had a VW vanagon with a broken swaybar link and didn't notice much of a difference.
