Heck with the rapid depreciation.

Speaking for myself, I would feel better about buying this car for $20K, than the latest from todays available car world in the $25K range.

Killing time at work!
Overall, I agree with you, especially if you drive a lot of miles. The deal killer for me is knowing that getting it properly insured would be a PITA...
Besides, I'd be a little weary of a number of things with such low mileage. I'm sure that either it sat idle a lot or it had a vast number of very short trips....
Neither is very good.

27k????

Comon! Its a friggin 20 year old car. Sure its in great shape, but lets not get ridiculous here.

If I had the money to blow, my luck would be like this;
1. Buy beautiful 27K SDL
2. Random crap starts going wrong and I get pi$$ed.

Under 5K for me...if the **** hits the fan with a 2K car, you have some leeway to repair or send to crusher.

Yes, just 90k, totally rust free from SoCal, with ALL history, books and records and real clean.

For the W116 seekers, this is as good as it gets.

A similar vehicle from Texas sold on Ebay a few months ago for $16-17K. It had more miles, like 30 or 50 thousandish. I thought about it, briefly.

One thing this proves is that a heated garage is better for storing a car than an underground concrete vault.

I'd rather have that W116 than the SDL. Wow that W116 is nice and clean!!!

Ultimately, $27,000 gets you a very low-mile 1999 300TD - which I'd rather have.

Have to give my 2 cents

As I recently read in Keith Martin's Sport Car Marketplace magazine (I think that is what it is called), "There's a but for every seat."

There will be someone who will want the best, has the means, and will grab it - it's just a matter of time before the seller finds the right buyer.

When I look at this car I think - OK, my 84 300SD "new" was $38K and change. This 87 300SD is going for $28K and is probably one of the best examples you can find. Not a bad drop in value at 20 years ~25%.

My 97 S600 was $136K new. I bought it with 44K miles for less than $30K ~80+% drop in value. Took me about two years of searching to find a Texas car with low miles that wasn't abused by the PO.

In fact there is a 98 S600 (very rare - 114 brought to the US that year) on eBay right now with 21K miles - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TWENTY-ONE-THOUSAND-MILES-1-Owner-NO-RESERVE-45-Pix_W0QQitemZ250156153895QQihZ015QQcategoryZ6336QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem - though I'm not sure what type of surface rust the car could get underneath in Pittsburgh, the interior is in amazing shape. I'd be curious to see what that one runs up to as it's a nice benchmark of value 2-3 years after I got mine (meaning are the good example W140s still depreciating like a rock).

Anyway.... It's not worth $28K - probably $15K given it's condition - but I wouldn't be surprised if it sells. There are a lot of folks still left on the planet with money to spend on things they like.

I love that '79 especially, but both are nice. I would be afraid to drive a car that nice anywhere, except to car shows. Everyone would have to take their shoes off before getting in, and couldn't bring any food or drink...there'd have to be no chance of rain or hail in the forecast before driving....and I'd have to spend every weekend detailing it. Nope, too perfect of a car to enjoy, until I am retired and get a bigger garage....

I really like that S600, thats a lot of money for that car, but it looks like the condition supports it.

$10k more and your in bi turbo range!

Patience, grasshopper.

The law of averages should catch up to you finally. Burgundy
isn't common though. I tried for over a year but couldn't find one that color.

So I had to go to Los Angeles, and found a black one there.

Then 6 months later someone pointed me to a burgundy one just like i wanted, only 60,000 on it, but it was too late for me.

Ebay, autotrader, craigslist, for sale on the forums. All the usual places, and put the word out.

Why is the depreciation so terrible on the S class MB's? Are there some reliability issues? I would think the flagship of MB should be a very well built automobile.
